FROSTBURG, Md. – A scoring surge midway through the second half was too much for the Frostburg men's basketball team to overcome as it suffered a 93-67 loss at third-ranked Christopher Newport, Saturday afternoon.
The Bobcats (4-13, 3-7) kept things close through the midway point of the second as junior Tyler Michael and freshman Rhashad Johnson hit baskets at 10:39 and 9:48 to pull Frostburg to within seven at 58-51.
The Captains (15-2, 9-1) led by as many as 15 points early in the second. After Frostburg brought the score to within seven, CNU connected on a three-straight three-pointers that made up a 9-0 run for the visitors and a 70-53 lead.
At 3:40, the Captains' Luther Gibbs hit a three-pointer that increased the lead to 82-60 and they grabbed a game-high 29-point lead, 93-64, with 1:29 to play.
Inside the final minute, freshman Obediah Stith and sophomore Steven Glasbrenner added a free throw and layup to pull the final count to 93-67.
Christopher Newport led throughout the first half, but Frostburg hung tough for much of the half. Michael pulled the Bobcats to within 12-11 at 14:24 with a jumper.
Christopher Newport pushed the score to 19-11, but Frostburg answered with six-straight points to cut the deficit back to two, 19-17. The Captains tacked on their own 6-0 run that extended the score to 26-17.
Sophomore Edwin Cole hit a pair of layups later in the half that kept FSU within six before Christopher Newport increased its advantage to 10 with less than three minutes to go.
Johnson cut the Frostburg deficit to 38-30 with a layup at 1:09, freshman Lawrence Pettis, Jr. made a layup with 34 seconds left for a 38-32 score. Johnson hit a pair of foul shots with one second left in the stanza to cut the halftime deficit to 41-34.
Michael led Frostburg in scoring with 15 points, while Johnson contributed 14. Cole contributed 10.
CNU was led in scoring by Tim Daly with 15 points, while Marcus Carter scored 14 and had nine rebounds. As a team, the Captains shot 56.5 percent from the floor, made 35 baskets and 10 three-pointers.
Frostburg hosts Marymount (Va.) this Wednesday at 8:00 pm.
