Campbell Scores Career-High In Bobcat Loss

FROSTBURG, Md. – Junior Darren Campbell poured in a career-high 29 points and a Frostburg rally came up short in an 80-66 loss to York (Pa.), Wednesday.

Campbell has now turned in back-to-back solid outings for the Bobcats (2-12, 1-6). On Saturday, he totaled 14 points in a loss at No. 15 Salisbury, while on Wednesday he reached 29 points behind 11-of-16 shooting with three three-pointers.

Campbell was one of three Bobcat players in double figures. Freshman Rashad Johnson contributed 12 points behind three three-pointers as well, while fellow freshman Lawrence Pettis, Jr. added 10 points.

Junior Zachary Coalmon and sophomore Edwin Cole each grabbed six rebounds to lead Frostburg.

Campbell scored nine of Frostburg's first 11 points and the Bobcats jumped out to an eight-point cushion, 11-3, in the early going, less than four minutes into action.

A traditional three-point play from Pettis, Jr. on a layup and free throw kept FSU in the lead at 14-8. Junior Gregory Gibbs and Campbell connected on back-to-back baskets for Frostburg at 11:41 and 11:05 as Frostburg pushed its lead back to seven at 21-14.

Campbell knocked down another three-pointer at 9:39 as Frostburg led 25-18. However, York (9-5, 4-3) answered with a 14-1 scoring jolt over the next three minutes for a 32-26 lead.

The Spartans continued their surge by extending their lead to 10, 40-30 with 3:00 left until halftime. The visitors added the final four points of the half for a 44-30 lead at intermission.

Frostburg cut the deficit to single digits three times in the second half, but never pulled closer than seven.

Midway through the second half, Frostburg posted a quick 9-0 run that started with a Johnson three-pointer at 10:03. Cole, Coalmon and Johnson all followed with layups that pulled FSU to within seven, 63-56 with 8:51 to play.

York (Pa.) pushed its lead back to 13, 73-60 at 3:16 and Frostburg posted one final run before the final horn. Johnson started the run with another three-pointer, this time at 2:58, and Campbell hit two free throws as the hosts pulled to 73-66 with 1:56 to play.

The Spartans hit 5-of-6 free throws in the final minute to seal the win.

Matt Scamuffo and Blayde Reich tied for the York scoring lead with 16 points. Brad Wesner came off the bench to score 12.

Frostburg shot 48.1 percent from the field on 25-of-52 attempts, but York (Pa.) was 30-of-39 from the charity stripe to make up the difference.

Frostburg travels to Marymount this Saturday for a 4:00 pm.
