WASHINGTON, D.C. – Frostburg State suffered a 2-1 setback to Catholic on Sunday in non-conference women's soccer action behind a late goal from the host Cardinals.
Frostburg (0-2) controlled the tempo of the opening half of play by outshooting Catholic, 11-3. Four of those shots were on net, forcing CUA's keeper Ally Marcello to save all four.
Bobcat junior Melanie Bell led the way for FSU with five first-half shots, including four in a three minute span starting at 14:01.
At the other end, Catholic took just three shots in the opening half and Bobcat senior keeper Karen Belteton made two saves.
The second half was in favor of the Cardinals in terms of offense as they attempted 15 shots to just two for Frostburg.
Sophomore Rhianna Lapen played the second half in net for Frostburg and made seven saves to help hold off the Cardinal attack.
The hosts struck first in the 62
nd minute when Elizabeth Johnson found the net off a crossed ball from inside the 18.
Frostburg answered with an unassisted goal from sophomore Bryce Papp in the 74
th minute to even things at 1-1.
The game looked like it was heading for extra time until the final minute when Olivia Perez gave CUA the win with a goal with 58 seconds showing on the clock.
Frostburg returns to the field when it travels to Washington & Jefferson on Wednesday at 7:00 pm.
