WASHINGTON, Pa. – Freshman forward Brook Shehade broke away from the defense and scored the overtime game-winning goal as part of a late rally to propel the Frostburg women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Washington & Jefferson at Alexandre Stadium Wednesday night.
Frostburg (1-2) held the edge in shots, 12-10, including seven in the second half.
Washington & Jefferson (2-1) opened up the scoring in the 17
th minute on a rebound goal by Jordan Toohey that beat senior keeper Karen Belteton. It would be the only goal allowed by Frostburg, who used the goaltending tandem of Belteton and sophomore Rhianna Lapen.
Lapen made two saves in 49 minutes of action in the second half and overtime, earning her first win of the young season.
Frostburg was able to tie the game at one in the 82
nd minute when Alyssa Malanik scored her first goal of the season on an unassisted goal off a free kick.
Washington & Jefferson made a late charge looking to take the lead in the 87
th minute. Brianna Floryshak gained some separation and got off a shot that hit the crossbar.
In overtime, Frostburg failed on a corner kick attempt but won the game less than a minute later on Shehade's first goal of the season.
Frostburg will look to maintain its winning ways on Saturday, September 10 when the Bobcats travel to New Jersey to face Rutgers-Newark. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
