Frostburg Downs Neumann, Loses To LVC

ASTON, Pa. – Junior Zoe Harris smacked 21 kills, junior Madelyn Torres distributed 66 assists and junior Lindsey Scepura posted 41 digs as Frostburg split a pair of matches at Neumann, Saturday.

The Bobcats (8-9) opened the day with a 3-1 defeat of host Neumann. Frostburg took games one, two and four by the scores of 25-21. The Knights (4-6) captured set three 25-14.

In the second match of the day, Lebanon Valley (8-4) took down the Bobcats in straight sets 25-23, 25-20 and 27-25.

Against the Knights, junior Chelsea Parrinello led the attack with 13 kills followed by 11 from Harris.

Parrinello's second kill of the day handed FSU a 12-7 lead in the first set against Neumann, while Harris smoked back-to-back kills as Frostburg later led 17-12. Both Torres and Parrinello had kills late in the set to help lift FSU to a 25-21 win.

The host Knights held several leads in the second game, including a 17-16 lead after a kill from Rachel Cray and an 18-17 edge following an error on the Bobcats. A kill from Harris and a service ace from Scepura put Frostburg ahead for good at 19-18. Harris later added two more kills as Frostburg led 23-21, before two attack errors on Neumann ended the second set, 25-21.

In the third game, Frostburg led in the early going behind an ace from Scepura and a kill from Harris. However, Neumann rebounded with a 12-4 run that resulted in a Frostburg timeout and an 18-10 lead. Melanie Malseed ended the set with a kill and a 25-14 win.

The Bobcats closed out the win in the fourth with another 25-21 win. Frostburg trailed 16-15 in the middle of the set, but kills from Harris and junior Karli Grimes helped Frostburg to an 18-16 lead. Moments later, Grimes tacked on three more kills for a 23-18 lead. Freshman Biamba Tshitenge smacked a late kill to help Frostburg to the win.

Torres posted her third-straight double-double with 34 assists and 20 digs, while Scepura paced the team with 21 digs.

In the loss to LVC, the Bobcats kept things close in all three sets.

A kill from Harris early in set one got the ball rolling for Frostburg. Frostburg's next point was an attack error on the Dutchmen, followed by a service ace from freshman Kathryn Lough and a kill from Grimes and Frostburg led 11-7.

Frostburg again rallied late in the first set. Trailing 17-16, four–consecutive kills for the Bobcats handed them a 19-17 lead and forced a timeout from LVC. After the timeout, Frostburg again led by two, 22-20 after a kill from Grimes. Greta Weidemoyer helped close out the game after posting three kills for a 25-23 win.

Lebanon Valley tried to run away with set two after opening up with a 10-5 lead. Back-to-back service aces from Scepura helped Frostburg gain a little momentum as it slowly cut away at the deficit. Grimes notched another kill that pulled FSU to within one, 18-17. However, that was as close as Frostburg would get as LVC pulled away for a 25-20 win.

Lebanon Valley led for much of the third and final set and Frostburg trailed by six, 21-15, late in the game. Tshitenge started Frostburg's rally with three-straight kills that forced an LVC timeout at 21-18.

A kill from Grimes, a service ace from freshman Cori Smothers and later two kills from Harris and Frostburg had tied the set at 24-24 and again at 25-25.

Lebanon Valley, however, closed out the match with back-to-back kills for a 27-25 final.

Grimes hit .333 against the Dutchmen with 12 kills followed by Harris with 10. Torres handed out 32 assists as Scepura finished with 20 digs.

Frostburg State returns to action next Friday when it hosts Mary Washington for its CAC opener at 7:00 pm.
