Volleyball Drops Tough Match to No. 17 Mary Washington

FROSTBURG, Md. – In its Capital Athletic Conference season-opener, the Frostburg State volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to No. 17 Mary Washington, on a rainy Friday evening at Bobcat Arena.

The Bobcats (8-10, 0-1 CAC) fought hard in all three sets to the 17th ranked Eagles (17-1, 2-0) but it wasn't enough as UMW slipped by in a three-set victory, 25-22, 25-19 and 25-12.
FSU and UMW both totaled five service aces while the Eagles held the advantage in kills, 41-28, blocks, 6-3, assists, 39-27, and digs, 59-50.

Juniors Naya Cheatem and Chelsea Parrinello led the Bobcat offense with 13 and nine kills, respectively. Junior Madelyn Torres paced the team with 23 assists while freshman Kathryn Lough and junior Lindsey Scepura tallied 10 digs a piece.

Mary Washington jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first set but the Bobcats powered back to tie the game at six. A kill from Cheatem and an Eagle attack error gave FSU its first lead of the game 8-7, and the set tied five more times before UMW used a four-point rally to go up, 15-12. Towards the end of the set, FSU came within two of the Eagles, 23-21, but it wasn't enough as UMW slipped past to win, 25-22.

FSU took the lead to start set two, 3-1, but Mary Washington scored five unanswered points to take over the lead, 8-6. The Eagles used two three-point rallies to pull away with the set and win, 25-19.

UMW took an early lead in set three, 5-2, but the Bobcats surged back to bring the game within one, 5-4. FSU managed to stay within three points of the visitors for most of the set, exchanging points back-and-forth, before the Eagles went on a six-point rally to surge ahead and take the final set, 25-12.

The Bobcats return to the court tomorrow to host No. 14 Christopher Newport for a CAC matchup set to start at 1:00 pm.
