Setting the Scene
Frostburg State hosts Southern Virginia in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) matchup this Saturday, Sept. 17 at 7:00 pm. It's the second home game of the season for the Bobcats and is their second night game of the campaign. The 2016 season marks the first time that two night games have been hosted at Bobcat Stadium in the facilities' 43-year history.

FSU and SVU have met three previous times and Frostburg currently leads the series 2-1.

The matchup will be the second league game for the Bobcats as they endured a 43-7 loss at #17 Wesley last Saturday. Meanwhile, the contest will serve as the conference opener for the Knights and their second game of the season. The Knights had a bye last week after downing Earlham 28-18 in their season opener.

Frostburg is trying for its third 2-1 start under third-year head coach DeLane Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald is the only coach in Frostburg's history to win his career opener and he has guided the Bobcats to three season-opening wins during his tenure.

Last fall, the Bobcats finished their season at 6-4, including a 5-4 finish in their first season as a member of the New Jersey Athletic Conference. FSU collected a five-game winning streak during the middle part of the season, the longest streak in the program since the 1999 team opened the season 6-0.

Southern Virginia won its season opener under first-year head coach Joe DuPaix. A year ago, the Knights finished 0-10 and they were just 1-9 in 2014. DuPaix and his coaching staff have installed a triple option attack on offense and SVU ran for 336 yards in the win over Earlham.

The Series
Saturday's matchup between the Bobcats and Knights is just the fourth in the series for the two program's.

Southern Virginia captured a 35-20 win in Frostburg in 2007 in the first-ever meeting.

The Bobcats have rebounded to win the last two games, including a 42-7 win in Buena Vista last fall.

Scouting Southern Virginia
Southern Virginia is under the direction of first-year head coach Joe DuPaix in 2016. He arrived after a two-year stint at BYU as the recruiting coordinator and running backs coach, helping the Cougars to 18 wins, including a 10-win season in '11.

Prior to that, Dupaix coached the slot backs at the U.S. Naval Academy, helping the Midshipmen to three-straight bowl games and two Commander-In-Cheif trophies.

At Southern Virginia, DuPaix has installed the triple option attack that was successful at the Naval Academy and SVU rushed for 336 yards on 68 carries in the season opener.

SVU scored 28 points and four different ball carries scored for the Knights. Michael Frye led the way with 81 yards on 11 carries, followed by Lakeith Hopkins with 68 yards on five carries.

Head Coach DeLane Fitzgerald
DeLane Fitzgerald is in his third season at the helm of the Frostburg State football program in 2016 and his impact has been immediate. The Bobcats finished 4-6 overall in '14 and posted a 6-4 mark a year ago. The six wins mark the first winning season for the Bobcats since the 2005 season, while the Bobcats' five-game winning streak is the longest since the 1999 team.

Frostburg hasn't just improved in the win/loss column, but the team GPA has improved every semester since Fitzgerald became head coach. Fitzgerald and his staff also see vast improvements in the weight room and around campus and in the town of Frostburg in terms of volunteer hours.

On the field, Fitzgerald's squad continues to improve statistically in every aspect of the game. On offense, the Bobcats set the school record in completion percentage (61.1%) last fall and finished fourth in the New Jersey Athletic Conference in rushing (164.3 ypg.).

On the other side of the ball, the Bobcats' improved in total defense for the second-straight year. In his first year, Fitzgerald's defense allowed 359.6 yards per game, while a year ago, FSU finished third in the NJAC at 313.4 yards allowed per contest. Prior to Fitzgerald's arrival, Frostburg allowed 464.2 yards per contest during the '13 season.

Fitzgerald also placed an emphasis in special teams since the day of his arrival at Frostburg. Following the '14 season, the Bobcats finished 17th in the nation in blocked kicks (6) and they finished 18th a year ago (6). FSU also finished 11th in the country last season in punt returns (15.63) and 15th in kickoff return defense (14.95).
