FROSTBURG, Md. – After allowing a goal in the first half, the Frostburg State women's soccer team scored three unanswered goals, including two in the second half, to rally past Shenandoah, 3-1, Wednesday under the lights at Bobcat Stadium.
The Hornets (4-2) scored on a breakaway goal in the 19
th minute when Emily Yergin dribbled for nearly half of the field and connected with a left-footed goal for a 1-0 cushion.
Shenandoah outshot Frostburg 15-8 for the contest, but FSU scored three goals over its next six shots.
With less than five minutes remaining in the first half, sophomore Bryce Papp took a centering pass from sophomore Anais Ventura and knocked a shot towards that net that ricocheted off an Hornet defender and into the net that evened the score at 1-1 at halftime.
Shenandoah had a chance to answer in the 56th minute when a shot from Yergin was cleared off the goal line by Bobcat junior Kourtney McLain after the ball got past keeper Rhianna Lapen.
In the 60
th minute, junior Katie Broadhurst gave the hosts the lead for good. She gathered in a loose ball that had deflected off Hornet keeper Erin Septer and Broadhurst lifted a left-footed attempt over a Hornet defender and into the top left corner of the net.
Junior Melanie Bell added an insurance goal for Frostburg over 10 minutes later. Freshman Brooke Shehade took a corner kick that found its way to Bell who knocked the ball into the lower left corner of the net for the 3-1 lead and eventually the win.
Bobcat keeper Karen Belteton and Lapen each played a half in net. Belteton made two saves and allowed the SU goal, while Lapen finished with five.
Frostburg returns to action on Friday when it travels to Stevenson at 7:00 pm.
