CRESSON, Pa. – The 17
th-ranked Frostburg State baseball team rolled to a big win over Penn State Altoona, Friday, behind a season-high 25 runs.
Junior Devin Bell had six hits and drove in six runs, senior Jamaal Windom scored five runs and Frostburg routed the Lions, 25-6 in eight innings, for its fourth-straight win. The game was called in the eighth due to heavy rain.
The Bobcats (29-10) also connected on a season-high 23 hits and stole seven bases.
FSU scored five runs in the first inning and held a slim 7-6 edge after two innings. However, it was a nine-run fifth inning that made the difference.
Twelve different Frostburg players registered a hit in the game, including six from Bell. He finished the contest 6-for-7 with six RBI and four runs scored. He drove in at least one run in five of the eight innings.
Meanwhile, Windom was 2-for-5 with two RBI, five runs and two stolen bases. He scored twice in the fifth frame.
Junior Jake Stephens earned the win on the mound in relief of starter Lane Ward. Stephens tossed 4.2 innings and allowed just two hits, while striking out two. Sophomore Garrett Wiles fanned four over the final 2.0 innings of work.
Senior Teron Tyre, along with juniors Brad Garrant and Cody Harman each drove in three runs. Tyre was 3-for-4 with two runs, Garrant finished 2-for-6 with three runs, while Harman was 1-for-3 with a run scored.
With Frostburg clinging to a 7-6 lead, the Bobcats added two runs in the fourth inning for some breathing room. Bell singled to lead off the inning and scored on a ground out from senior Jeremy Remalia. Harman singled home Garrant for the second run of the frame.
In the fifth, Bell kicked things off with a two-run single that scored both Windom and junior JT Tipton. Garrant then doubled home both Bell and Tyre and Harman plated Garrant with a sacrifice fly as the Bobcats led 14-6.
Frostburg continued the surge when senior Zach Keeler scored on an error. Windom singled home senior Vince Foreman and Tyre capped the inning with a two-run single to center that allowed both Windom and Tipton to score.
Windom and Bell each drove in a run in the seventh as Frostburg increased its lead to 20-6.
In the eighth, FSU added five more runs. The first came on a sacrifice fly from Tipton that scored Keeler. Bell drove in another run with a RBI single and senior pitcher Logan Hunt even got in on the action with run-producing single that scored Tyre for the game's final run.
Frostburg hosts Pitt-Greensburg tomorrow for senior day at 12:00 pm.
