FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Frostburg State softball team split a pair of games against Mary Washington, Saturday afternoon. The Bobcats won the first contest, 5-1, before dropping a close, 6-5, decision to the Eagles in extra innings in game two.
At the plate, senior Lauren Capece finished the day going 3-for-5 and producing three RBI for FSU (19-7, 5-1 CAC). Junior Hannah Tavik (4-for-8) totaled two RBI and a double, while senior Renay Aubel finished the day with a homerun.
Sophomore Allison Short pitched a complete 7.0 innings in game one, allowing only one run and striking out five. In game two, Tavik, freshman Ali Caulkins and Short all saw time in the circle. Caulkins pitched 6.0 innings with one strike out and allowed only two runs. Short closed game two with 1.2 innings pitched and ultimately took the loss.
Game one remained a scoreless, defensive battle until inning three when the Bobcats jumped onto the board first. With runners on second and third, senior Taylor Blevins reached on an error by the Eagle's short stop allowing junior Jessica Dubbs to score the first run for FSU.
Mary Washington's Sarah Manugo hit an RBI double to score one runner for the Eagle's and tie the game 1-1.
However, FSU drove in four runs in the seventh inning to seal the victory. The inning started off with an RBI single from Tavik to score Dubbs. Next, Blevins hit a two-run double into left field and scored both Tavik and junior Emily Zengel. Capece finished the game with an RBI single that gave the Bobcats a 5-1 victory.
The Bobcats had a strong start in game two; Aubel hit a two-run homer in the top of the first inning to give FSU a two-run advantage early on.
However, Mary Washington followed in the bottom of the first with a homerun from Olivia Tatara and an RBI single to tie the ball game, 2-2. With the bases loaded, Amy Skyes walked to bring in another run for Mary Washington and give them their first lead of the day.
In the fifth inning, Capece hit an RBI single to center field to tie the ball game at three runs each.
Tavik doubled in the sixth inning to bring in Zengel and give the Bobcats a one-run advantage. With the bases loaded, Capece walked and Tavik scored to end the inning, 5-3.
However, Mary Washington fought back in the seventh inning, scoring on two RBI singles that sent the game into extra innings with the score tied at five.
In the eighth inning, Stefannie Asselanis singled into left field and brought Caroline Callahan home to score and give the Eagles the 6-5 victory.
The Bobcats will resume action tomorrow when they face Christopher Newport for a doubleheader set to start at 1:00 pm.
