Frostburg Softball Earns Spilt In Wild Series At #8 CNU

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Frostburg State and No. 8 Christopher Newport played an exciting and wild doubleheader series, Sunday in CAC softball action.

The Bobcats (20-8, 6-2 CAC) captured game one by knocking off the nationally-ranked Captains, 13-6 in 10 innings. In the night cap, CNU (28-5, 8-2) used a pair of late runs to earn a 4-3 win in eight innings.

Frostburg collected an eight-run 10th inning in the opener for the win. Junior Hannah Tavik took the victory in the circle after tossing the final 3.1 innings and holding the Captains hitless. She struckout four for her 11th win.

The teams battled to a pair of ties, one following the third inning and the other coming after the seventh frame. Frostburg scored first when sophomore Sam Gatton homered to left center for a 1-0 FSU lead in the second.

CNU tied the game with a single run in the third, but the Bobcats posted two in the fourth for a 3-1 edge. Senior Lauren Capece singled home Tavik and Gatton reached base on an error as senior Taylor Blevins scored.

Following another run in the sixth from CNU, Frostburg surged to a 5-2 advantage with two more in the seventh. Senior Renay Aubel singled to right field that scored junior Jessica Dubbs and Blevins singled home freshman Olivia Ford who came on to run for Aubel.

The Captains answered again, this time to the tune of three runs in the home half of the seventh that evened things at 5-5.

In the decisive 10th, Blevins started the outburst with a single up the middle that scored Tavik. Gatton doubled home both Capece and Blevins, junior Emily Zengel drew a bases-loaded walk that allowed Gatton to cross home plate and Tavik reached on an error by the CNU infield that scored both freshman Ali Caulkins and sophomore Rae Harrison.

At that point, Frostburg  led 11-5, but wasn't done as Blevins singled home Zengel and Capece singled home Tavik for a 13-5 lead. CNU narrowed the final deficit to 13-6 with a run-producing ground out in the eighth.

In total, Frostburg pounded out 15 hits in the game and took advantage of five Captain errors. Blevins and Gatton each drove in three runs, while Tavik and Gatton each scored twice. Blevins was 4-for-6 with three RBI and two runs, while Gatton was 2-for-5 with three RBI, two runs, a double and home run.

In the night cap, Frostburg jumped out to a 2-0 lead after scoring in the first inning via a bomb to right center from Tavik that scored Zengel.

Caulkins earned the start in the circle and tossed the first 5.2 innings with zero earned runs and five strikeouts. She scattered just five hits and held Christopher Newport hitless in both the second and fifth innings.

CNU evened the score with a pair of runs in the sixth inning on a two-run double to left center.

Frostburg again surged ahead when Blevins singled home Tracey in the top of the eighth for a 3-2 lead. However, the Captains took the win with two runs in the bottom of the eighth, both with two outs.

Tavik drove in two in the second game and finished 2-for-4 with a run scored. Zengel also posted two hits and a run.

Frostburg travels to Southern Virginia on Wednesday for a doubleheader at 4:00 pm.
