FROSTBURG, Md. – Senior Spenser Love and sophomore Adam Gross both tallied four goals as the Frostburg State men's lacrosse team defeated Southern Virginia, 15-6, in Capital Athletic Conference action, Tuesday afternoon at Bobcat Stadium.
Photo GalleryLove had a game-high with six points with two assists and four ground balls, while Gross added an assist and two ground balls. Senior Nick Stailey (3 goals, 1 assist) and sophomore Ethan Aikin (3 assists) also had a big day for the Bobcats (12-2, 3-2 CAC).
Frostburg outshot SVU 55-32 and was nearly perfect on clear attempts (13-for-15). With 11 more ground balls (36-25), FSU also won 15-of-24 face offs. Senior Erik Geiser won 81% of his face offs (13-for-16) and picked up a game-high nine ground balls to lead the Bobcats.
Southern Virginia (5-8, 2-5 CAC) found the back of the net first on a tally from Casey Rich, but FSU answered back with four straight, including a goal and an assist each from Gross and Love, to put the Bobcats up 4-1 after the first quarter.
Spencer Tunick cut the Knights' deficit to two, 4-2, with 10:10 to go before halftime, but Love had the next two on helpers from Stailey (9:02) and Aikin (7:48), including a laser-quick shot past the Knight defense for a four-goal, 6-2 advantage at the intermission.
Frostburg continued its dominating ways after halftime with goals from Stailey (13:48) and Gross (10:35) before Southern Virginia answered with a mark from Zach Danneman with 9:45 left in the third. However, just 43 seconds later, Love found Stailey to kick start a 7-0 run that lasted into the fourth quarter.
With a solid 9-3 lead heading into the final 15 minutes, Frostburg had four goals in the first five minutes of the quarter, with back-to-back marks from Gross just 41 seconds apart.
Senior Blake Grudzien then found an opening behind the crease and hit Stailey, who dodged a defender around the left side of the goal and buried a shot past the Knight defense for Frostburg's 14
th goal with 8:27 to go.
With time winding down, the underclassmen got it done as sophomore Nick Pontorno found freshman Garrett Olds for FSU's final goal with 3:57 left.
Southern Virginia's Payton Kimber and Ryan Larsen had back-to-back unassisted tallies before Kimber found Larsen for the game's final goal with two seconds to play and FSU walked away with the victory.
Senior goalkeeper Tom Kraemer allowed just three goals in 55:50 minutes of play and had six saves in the win. Sharing time in the crease was classmate Taylor Schmitz, who added two saves.
Ian Arave finished with nine saves for Southern Virginia, while Kimber led the Knights with a goal and two assists.
The Bobcats return to action on Saturday, April 9 when they travel to No. 1 Salisbury to battle the Sea Gulls at 1:00 pm.
