Bobcats Drop Narrow Contest To Scranton

OWING MILLS, Md. – The 6th-ranked Frostburg State baseball team jumped out to a 4-1 lead against Scranton before ultimately dropping the contest, 5-4, Sunday at Stevenson University.

The Bobcats (6-2) posted two runs in both the first and fifth innings for a 4-1 edge, backed by the solid effort of senior Anderson Burgess on the mound.

Burgess struckout eight batters in 6.1 innings of work and scattered six hits and was charged with two earned runs.

Meanwhile at the plate, junior Cody Harman started things off for Frostburg in the top of the first when he singled to short and scored two batters later when junior Devin Bell smacked a home run over the center field fence. It was Bell's fourth homer of the season and second in as many games.

Scranton narrowed its gap to 2-1 when Kevin Nolan doubled home a run in the third, but the Bobcats increased their lead to 4-1 thanks to a pair of runs in the fifth.

Senior Jamal Windom singled up the middle in the fifth to lead off the inning followed by a single to right from junior JT Tipton. Windom advanced to third on Tipton's single and Tipton later stole second to put two runners in scoring position. Harman hit a sac fly to left field for the first run that plated Windom and senior JK Hockaday doubled down the left field line that scored Tipton for the second run and a 4-1 edge.

The Royals threatened in the fifth with runners at second and third before rallying with four runs in the seventh for the 5-4 lead. Zach Dignam and Patrick Mergel each drove in two during the inning.

The Bobcats managed just one hit over the final two innings before suffering their second loss of the season. Hockaday and Windom led the way with two hits each, while Bell drove in a pair behind his home run.

The Bobcats return to action next Saturday when they open CAC action with a doubleheader at Penn State Harrisburg at noon.
