Baseball Splits In Conference Opener

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. – In their Capital Athletic Conference season opener, the 8th-ranked Frostburg State baseball team split a doubleheader against Penn State-Harrisburg, Saturday afternoon. The
Bobcats won a 15-9 decision in the first game before dropping 4-3 in the second contest.

In the first game, FSU jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the second inning when senior Jamaal Windom homered and brought in senior Jeremy Remalia and junior Cody Harmon to score.

The Bobcats scored four more in the third inning to increase their lead, 7-0. Junior Devin Bell hit a homerun to start off the inning, before senior Connor Cooper scored off an error by the Lions third baseman. Junior JT Tipton also had a RBI single to complete the inning.

In the fourth inning, Harmon had a two run double to bring the score to 8-0.

Senior KJ Hoackaday homered in the sixth inning. Penn State Harrisburg's Kevin Kremer scored off a single from teammate Chris Iocca to put the Lions on the board.

The Lions scored five runs in the seventh inning but it wasn't enough as FSU scored three more in the eighth from a RBI double from Windom and two in the ninth when Cooper hit a two run single to overpower PSH, 15-9.

Junior Ryan Callahan had eight strikeouts and only allowed one run in 6.0 innings pitched to pick up his first win of the season.

Windom led the way offensively with four RBI and a homerun. Senior Pat Stines also brought in two RBI.

FSU jumped out to an early lead in game two, scoring all three of its runs in the first inning, but couldn't keep the momentum rolling throughout the rest of the contest.

Doubles from Hockaday and Cooper brought in all three runs for the Bobcats. FSU held the Lions scoreless until the fifth inning when the Lion's Kremer scored off an error.

Three more Bobcat errors in the sixth and eighth innings gave the Lions the 4-3 advantage and ultimately the win.

Sophomore pitcher Lane Ward totaled seven strikeouts in 6.0 innings. Senior Nick Huff took the loss for FSU and struck out three batters in 2.0 innings.

The Bobcats will play a single-game Sunday, March 13 against Marymount (Va.). Opening pitch is set to start at 3:00 pm.
