FROSTBURG, Md. – Senior attackman Spenser Love scored with 7:34 left in the game to lift the Frostburg State men's lacrosse team over No. 16 Ursinus, 7-6, Saturday afternoon at Bobcat Stadium.
In a game that saw 7:30 worth of penalties, Frostburg (5-0) won 10-of-15 face-offs to energize its offense and keep the momentum in the Bobcats' favor.
Love (1 goal, 1 assist), senior midfielder Tate Rolland (2g), and junior midfielder Chase Cullison (1g, 1a) all tallied two points, while senior keeper Tom Kraemer finished with 10 saves between the pipes for the victory.
FSU got on the board first, with goals from Rolland (13:33), senior attackman Blake Grudzien (10:18), and Cullison (5:14) to lead the FSU to a quick 3-0 lead. However, with 2:44 left in the first quarter, Steve Mussoline found the back of the net to finally get Ursinus (2-1) on the board.
While the Bobcats outscored the Bears 3-1 in the first, Ursinus earned its own 3-1 rally in the second to sneak into halftime knotted at 4-4. FSU's lone second quarter goal came from senior midfielder Michael Kibler off a feed from senior attackman Nick Stailey on a too-close shot that hit the post and slipped past the Bears' keeper.
FSU struck first, with Rolland finding the back of the net just 3:18 into the third quarter.
With time precariously ticking at the end of the quarter, sophomore defender Josh Nicodemus fired a shot from the top left side of the box to give the Bobcats a two-goal, 6-4 lead heading into the final 15 minutes.
Ursinus evened the game at 6-6 with goals from Gerard Brown (11:12) and Tucker Noel (8:22) in the final quarter, but Love's goal less than a minute later proved to the difference as the Bobcats finished ahead, 7-6, at the final horn.
Senior midfielder Erik Geiser finished 6-for-10 at the face-off X with five ground balls, while junior midfielder Kyle Horak finished 4-for-5 with three ground balls.
Ursinus held the advantage in shots (37-29), ground balls (31-24) and had four less turnovers (16-12). Brown led the Bears with one goal and two assists while Desenberg added one goal and one assist. Keeper Brian Neff had seven saves in the loss.
The Bobcats return to action on Wednesday, March 9 when they play host to Lycoming at 4:00 pm.
