FROSTBURG, Md. – The No. 18 Frostburg State men's lacrosse team used a huge 7-1 second quarter en route to a 14-5 decision over Lycoming, Wednesday afternoon at Bobcat Stadium.
Junior midfielder Chase Cullison (4 goals, 1 assist) had a point in each quarter, including two goals in the decisive second quarter, to help lift the Bobcats to a 6-0 record overall. Senior attackmen Nick Stailey (2 goals, 1 assist) and Spenser Love (1 goal, 2 assists) both tallied three points.
The Bobcats outshot Lycoming 38-18 and picked up 18 more ground balls while going a perfect 16-for-16 on clear attempts. FSU handled the transition game well, allowing just 15 of Lycoming's 21 attempts to reach the restraining box.
Cullison opened scoring just 2:10 into the game, but Lycoming (1-4) came back with goals from Jake Wanamaker and Marcus Winn to steal an early 2-1 lead. That was all the motivation the Bobcats needed as they never trailed the Warriors following a mark from senior midfielder Michael Kibler with 1:31 left to tie the game at 2-2.
Cullison got his second just 40 seconds into the second quarter after firing a shot mid-fall and getting a little help from the post to give FSU its second lead of the game, 3-2.
Senior attackman Blake Grudzien took advantage of a loose ball off a bobbled save from the Warriors' keeper to push the Bobcats ahead two before Stailey found sophomore midfielder Ethan Aikin with 7:52 remaining before halftime to give FSU a cushy 5-2 lead.
It wasn't long, however, before Wanamaker found Andrew Ream for Lycoming's third and final goal of the half to bring the Warriors back within two, 5-3.
Love then took advantage of an extra-man opportunity and found the back of the net with 6:45 left on the clock. Cullison (5:54), Stailey (4:16) and Kibler (0:32) each added tallies before the end of the half to surge the Bobcats forward, 9-3.
Cullison found senior midfielder Tate Rolland with 12:02 showing on the clock in the third to keep Frostburg's momentum up following the break. Stailey (6:36) and a man-up tally from sophomore attack Nick Pontorno (5:52) sent FSU ahead, 12-3. With time winding down, Peter Pluta got help from Tim Breau for Lycoming's first goal in over 20 minutes.
Fourteen seconds into the final quarter, Lee Pappas found Ream for the Warriors' fifth and final goal.
Cullison (8:27) and sophomore midfielder Adam Gross (0:05) added insurance goals and give FSU its final 14-5 victory.
Senior midfielder Erik Geiser won 12-of-15 face-offs and picked up eight ground balls to help FSU to a 74% face-off winning percentage (17-of-23) on the day. Cullison and Love added five ground balls apiece.
Senior goalkeeper Tom Kraemer finished with four saves and shared time in the cage with senior goalkeeper Taylor Schmitz.
Wanamaker led the Warriors with three points on one goal and two assists. Keepers Joshua Tscheulin (7 saves) and Michael Tenant (2 saves) shared time in net.
The Bobcats return to action Saturday, March 12 in their Capital Athletic Conference opener against Marymount (Va.). Faceoff is slated for 4:00 pm.
