NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Senior Tate Rolland registered five points, but it wasn't enough as the No. 15 Frostburg State men's lacrosse team fell at Christopher Newport, 12-11, in Capital Athletic Conference action Saturday afternoon.
Rolland led the Bobcats (11-1, 2-1 CAC) behind four goals and one assist, while junior Chase Cullison added two goals and an assist. Senior Erik Geiser won 68 percent of his face-offs (15-of-22) and scooped up 11 ground balls, tying his career high.
Frostburg was nearly perfect on clears (13-of-14) and picked up two more ground balls than CNU (37-35).
FSU opened up the first quarter with a quick goal from Rolland just 1:38 into the game, but CNU's Will Geise answered back to knot the game at 1-1 early on.
The Bobcats then used a five-goal run that spanned into the second quarter with goals from sophomore Adam Gross, senior Spenser Love, sophomore Ethan Aikin, junior Chase Cullison, and senior Nick Stailey, to take a 6-1 lead.
Christopher Newport's Joey Rolando slipped past the FSU defense to shift the momentum in favor of the Captains (8-2, 2-0 CAC). Rolland answered back, but CNU's Matthew Crist had back-to-back tallies to bring the game within three, 7-4.
Rolland added his third of the game to double up the Bobcats' lead, 8-4, but CNU's Randy Foster found the back of the net with 2:22 to go. Frostburg held an 8-5 lead heading into the locker room.
Newport added three more goals in the third quarter, but Cullison found Love on an extra-man opportunity as FSU led by one, 9-8, heading into the final 15 minutes.
Crist and Shane McKenna had back-to-back goals to open the fourth and take a short-lived 10-9 lead. Cullison and Rolland then had goals just 57 seconds apart to give FSU the lead back, 11-10, with 9:02 remaining.
Rolando found Crist with 8:14 showing on the clock to knot the game at 11-11, then slipped a pass to Foster with 1:40 to go to give the Captains the game-winner.
Senior goalkeeper Taylor Schmitz finished with seven saves in the crease for the Bobcats. Junior John Gamber, freshman Joey Lucas, and sophomore Alex Philips all finished with four ground balls.
Crist led CNU with four goals, while Matt Hayden had 10 saves in the cage.
