FROSTBURG, Md. – Two goals in the final quarter proved to be decisive as the Frostburg State men's lacrosse team snuck past Messiah, 8-6, Wednesday afternoon at Bobcat Stadium.
Senior midfielder Tate Rolland (3 goals) scored with 4:39 left in the third quarter to get the ball rolling and knot the game at 6-6 heading into the final 15 minutes.
A huge goal from sophomore midfielder Keegan Colegrove swung the momentum in favor of Frostburg (4-0) and gave the hosts a 7-6 lead with just under 11 minutes left to play. Senior midfielder Michael Kibler then found sophomore attack Nate Collins with 3:21 to go for the Bobcats' final goal to seal the victory.
Despite being outshot 31-26 and picking up 13 less ground balls than Messiah (1-2), the Bobcats took advantage of Messiah's five face-off violations. Combined with the efforts of senior midfielder Erik Geiser (13-of-15) and junior midfielder Kyle Horak (3-for-5) earning the majority of wins at the X, FSU found a way to get the job done.
The Falcons got on the board first, with Matthew Franken taking advantage of an extra man due to a Bobcat penalty. One minute later, Rolland notched his first of the game to even the score, 1-1. Franken then found Trey Hanshew to put the visitors back on top, 2-1, at the end of the first.
Senior attack Nick Stailey found both Rolland and senior attack Blake Grudzien on back-to-back goals to open the second quarter, pushing the Bobcats ahead, 3-2.
Messiah's Justin Bradley tied the game for the third time, but Grudzien added his second of the game off a pass from junior midfielder Chase Cullison to again take the lead. Sophomore midfielder Adam Gross found the back of the net three minutes later to give FSU its first two-goal cushion.
With 36 seconds before halftime, Bradley found Henshew to cut the Falcons' deficit back to one, 5-4, heading into the locker room.
Blake Knobloch and Franken had tallies 3:15 apart to open the third quarter and snag back the lead before the Bobcats used the final 3-0 run to come away with the win.
Senior goalkeeper Tom Kraemer picked up his fourth win of the season with 10 saves in the cage.
Kraemer's counterpart Sam Stengel finished with eight saves in the loss for Messiah.
The Bobcats return to action Saturday, March 5 when they play host to No. 16 Ursinus. Face-off is scheduled for 1:00 pm at Bobcat Stadium.
