CHESTERTOWN, Md. – The No. 16 Frostburg State men's lacrosse team used a decisive 7-0 rally that started in the third quarter and lasted through the fourth to spark a comeback from five goals down and earn a 13-10 victory over Washington College, Saturday afternoon.
The Bobcats improve to 10-0 on the year, while the loss drops the Shoremen to 3-3.
Seniors Tate Rolland and Spenser Love and sophomore Adam Gross posted four points each, all with two goals and two assists to lead FSU. Junior Chase Cullison and senior Blake Grudzien tallied two goals as well.
The Bobcats were nearly perfect on extra-man opportunities, using the hosts' penalties to their advantage and scoring on 2-of-3 chances, while the Shoremen were just 1-of-5. Both teams were 13-of-26 on face-offs, despite senior Erik Geiser (9-of-17) and junior Kyle Horak (4-of-8) winning at least 50 percent of their face-offs.
Both teams exchanged goals in the first quarter, with Frostburg seeing goals from sophomore Keegan Colegrove (10:39), Cullison (6:58), and Gruzien, as the Bobcats led 3-2 at the end of the first quarter.
Washington College then used a 6-0 run that saw the only three goals scored in the second quarter and the first three after halftime to snag an 8-3 lead with 6:39 to go in the third. Sid Looney had three of the Shoremen's goals during that run, including the first and last tally.
The Bobcats refused to give up and their resilience proved decisive as they had goals from five different players to even the game at 8-8 heading into the final quarter.
Rolland opened the fourth with back-to-back tallies before Matt Allen could answer for WC and stop the Bobcats' rally to bring the game within one, 10-9.
Gross had a hand in two of the next three goals for the Bobcats, assisting on Grudzien's second mark at 6:39 and scoring himself at the 16-second mark after a tally from Love (3:03) to lift FSU up, 13-9.
Allen added a goal with one second remaining, but it was too little too late as Frostburg walked away with the 13-10 win.
Senior goalkeeper Tom Kraemer had a season-high 16 saves in the victory, while his counterpart Ben Flood finished with eight in the loss.
The Bobcats return to action on Wednesday, March 23 when they travel to McDaniel for a 7:00 pm face off.
