FERRUM, Va. – Despite scoring four runs in the ninth inning, the Frostburg State baseball team suffered a 17-7 loss to Ferrum College, Thursday afternoon.
Junior Brad Garrant led the Bobcat (8-4) offense after going 2-for-5 at the plate including two RBI and a homerun. Junior Devin Bell went 2-for-4 with a RBI and two doubles.
FSU got things started in the first inning when Bell hit a RBI double to left field to score senior KJ Hockaday. However, Ferrum added a run in the first to tie the ball game 1-1.
In the second inning, sophomore Greg Schneider hit an RBI single down the left field line to give the Bobcats a 2-1 lead.
Garrant homered in the third inning to give the Bobcats a two-run lead however, Ferrum's Austin Winkles hit a homerun in the third to bring the game within one.
The Panthers had a huge fifth inning, scoring five runs to take the lead, including a homerun by Ferrum's Anderson Ramos that scored three.
Ferrum continued to extend its lead in the seventh and eighth inning, scoring four and six runs, respectively.
The Bobcats tried to make a comeback in the ninth inning, scoring four runs. First, Hockaday hit a RBI single followed by freshman Mike Centrella hitting a RBI double to get five on the board for FSU.
Garrant hit a RBI single to left field and later scored on an error by centerfield, but it wasn't enough as the Panthers walked away with the victory.
Senior Kyle McCormack pitched four innings for FSU and suffered his first loss of the season. Sophomore Garrett Wiles, senior Vince Foreman and freshman Daniel Ryczek also saw time in the circle for the Bobcats.
Ferrum's Matt Wilder took the win with five innings pitched and two strikeouts.
Baseball will return to action tomorrow when they face CAC opponent Marymount at 1 pm.
