Baseball Falls At Marymount (Va.)

ARLINGTON, Va. – The No. 11 Frostburg State baseball team fell to Marymount (Va.), 5-3, in Capital Athletic Conference action, Friday afternoon.

The Bobcats (8-5, 2-2 CAC) used a big third inning to build momentum as junior Devin Bell drove in senior KJ Hockaday and junior Cody Harman on a homerun to right field to take an early 3-0 lead. The Saints (12-9, 4-0 CAC) turned a double-play to end the top of the inning and countered back in the bottom when Kaden Darrow drove in Roy Coates to cut their deficit to two, 3-1.

Just an inning later, however, Coates returned the favor and drove in Stephen Berczek and Brandon Orbe on a double to left field to come back and tie the game at 3-3 heading into the sixth.

With bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth, Marymount's Brandon Savage singled to left field to send Darrow across the plate and steal the lead from FSU, 4-3.

Luke Tyree led off in the bottom of the eighth inning with a homerun to push the Saints' lead to its final 5-3 mark.

Sophomore right hander Lane Ward struck out four in five innings before being relieved by senior rightie Nick Huff. Huff finished the game with one strikeout in three innings of work. Hockaday led the Bobcats, going 2-for-3 with a walk while sophomore Greg Schneider, Bell, junior Brad Garrant, senior Connor Cooper, and senior Zach Keeler all collected hits for FSU.

Darrow (2-for-3), Coates (2-for-4), Orbe (2-for-4) and Savage (2-for-5) all had two hits for Marymount in the win. Charlie DiGiulian struck out seven in 4.2 innings of play while John LaMotta got the win for the Saints.

FSU returns to action Saturday, March 19 when it travels to No. 10 Salisbury for a league doubleheader. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 9:00 am.
