FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Frostburg State baseball team scored two runs in the top of the ninth, but ultimately fell to Pitt-Greensburg, 4-3, on Sunday afternoon at J.P. Riddle Stadium.
Senior Jeremy Remalia led FSU (5-1) after going 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI. Senior KJ Hockaday and senior Connor Cooper added an RBI each for the Bobcats.
Pitt-Greensburg (1-2) got things started in the bottom of the fourth after Matt Germanoski was hit by a pitch and advanced to third after a single from teammate Dylan Pounds and a sacrifice bunt. Jake Bulick drove Germanoski in for the game's first run, and Zack Zimmerman plated Pounds after he grounded out to the pitcher for the inning's second out to give UPG a 2-0 lead.
Two innings later in the top of the sixth, it was FSU's turn to get on the board after Remalia doubled to right field. With two outs and Remalia on third, Hockaday sent a ball to left field to bring Remalia across the plate and cut FSU's deficit to 2-1.
Despite both senior Jamaal Windom and Hockaday getting hits in the top of the eighth, FSU remained behind 2-1.
In the bottom of the eighth, Pounds led off with a double for Pitt-Greensburg and teammate Bulick was intentionally walked to send Zimmerman to the plate. With runners on first and third, Zimmerman doubled to left field to score Pounds as Bulick made his way to third. Greg Lynn then hit a single to second base, but Bulick advanced to give UPG a 4-1 lead with an inning left to play.
With one out in the top of the ninth, junior Brad Garrant singled to left field and sophomore Greg Schneider hit up the right field line to put two men on base. Cooper added a hit of his own down the line to drive in senior Teron Tyre, who pinch ran for Garrant.
With Schneider on third and Cooper on first, Remalia hit a booming double down the left field line to score Schneider and advance Cooper to third and bring FSU back within one, 4-3. However, UPG turned a double play to kill the Bobcats' rally and steal the victory.
Sophomore right-hander Lane Ward and junior rightie Connor Gorman combined to strikeout five in seven innings, while UPG's Pounds threw 7.1 innings and had four strikeouts.
The Bobcats return to the field Saturday, March 5 when they travel to Stevenson to face Keystone at 11:00 am.
