FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State men's lacrosse team picked up where it left off last season, dominating in a convincing 16-4 victory over Bridgewater (Va.) in both teams' season-opener, Saturday afternoon at Bobcat Stadium.
Sophomore midfielder Keegan Colegrove (3 goals, 2 assists) posted five points for the Bobcats (1-0), while sophomore attack Nate Collins (3g, 1a) and senior midfielder Tate Rolland (3g) added three goals each.
The tandem of senior midfielder Erik Geiser (10-of-13) and junior midfielder Kyle Horak (9-of-10) got things started at the X, winning 19-of-23 face-offs to keep FSU's momentum up from start to finish. Geiser finished with seven ground balls.
Rolland (13:39), senior attack Blake Grudzien (7:03) and sophomore midfielder Adam Gross (6:03) got things rolling to give FSU a quick 3-0 lead.
Chris Voorhees then slipped past the Bobcat defense to give Bridgewater (0-1) its first goal, but Colegrove countered back with his first goal of the game less than a minute later to hand Frostburg a 4-1 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Collins and Bridgewater's Thomas Maher exchanged goals in the opening minutes of the second quarter, but it was all FSU after that as Colegrove netted his second and third goals, followed by a tally from Rolland as the Bobcats led 8-2 at halftime.
Less than three minutes into the third, Maher added another goal for the Eagles, but goals from senior attack Nick Stailey, Collins, and Rolland gave FSU an eight-goal cushion, 11-3.
With time winding down, Colegrove found senior midfielder Michael Kibler for a silky, behind-the-back shot to the upper left hand corner past the Bridgewater defense to hand the Bobcats a 12-3 lead heading into the final 15 minutes.
Junior midfielder Chase Cullison opened the fourth with two goals, sandwiching a tally from Bridgewater's Blake Mann. Grudzien and Collins rounded out scoring for FSU for the final 16-4 victory.
Frostburg held the advantage in shots (52-22), ground balls (36-23) and had just seven turnovers to the Eagles' 14.
Senior goalkeeper Tom Kraemer finished with eight saves, sharing time with classmate Taylor Schmitz (2 saves).
Kraemer's counterpart Andrew Buss finished with 17 saves in the cage, with five in each of the first three quarters.
Frostburg returns to action Saturday, February 27 when it squares off with Lebanon Valley at 12:00 pm.
