Bobcats Suffer Overtime Loss To Wesley

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State women's basketball team suffered a 76-72 overtime loss to Capital Athletic Conference opponent Wesley, Saturday afternoon.

On senior day, senior Courtney Young had her fifth double-double of the season posting 16 points and grabbing 15 rebounds. Junior Kache Fields scored 18 for the Bobcats; freshman Bryce Papp also contributed 18 points, including three three-pointers.

The high-energy match featured seven lead changes and seven ties with no team gaining larger than an eight-point lead all 45 minutes.
Wesley (6-17, 5-11 CAC) jumped out to a four-point 10-6 lead in the first quarter before FSU (3-20, 0-16 CAC) freshman Amber Downey made a layup and Papp made her first three-pointer to make it a one point ball game.

The Bobcats took over the rest of the first quarter, scoring six unanswered points to lead 18-12.

The Wolverines brought the game within two points in the opening minutes of the second quarter and no team was able to gain more than a four-point advantage in the remaining minutes of the half.

Young made three jumpers and junior Kache Fields made a three-pointer, but a last-second jumper from Wesley's Alexus Stroud put the Wolverines on top, 30-29, going into halftime.

Wesley remained in control during the third quarter, but the Bobcats remained relentless and the Wolverines weren't able to gain more than a six-point advantage throughout the quarter.

Papp made a three-pointer and Young went a perfect four-for-four in free throws but the Bobcats trailed by two entering the fourth quarter.

Two made free throws by junior Keri Hudson tied the game for FSU in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter. A three-pointer from Papp gave FSU the lead back with five minutes remaining in regulation.

A free-throw from Wesley's Tiyanna Gibbs tied the game at 62-62 to send the game into overtime.

The Wolverines scored three points to take the lead in overtime, but made free-throws form Hudson and Fields brought the game back to one. Wesley remained in control during the rest of overtime to walk away with the 76-72 victory.

Wesley's Stroud had 30 points while Brionna Johnson made 13 and grabbed 17 rebounds. Gibbs had three steals for the Wolverines.

The Bobcats will play their last home game of the season against York (Pa.) Wednesday, January 17 for a game set to start at 6:00 pm.
