FROSTBURG, Md. – A game-tying three pointer from senior guard Nick Smoot wasn't enough as the Frostburg State men's basketball team fell in it's second-straight overtime game, this time to Capital Athletic Conference opponent Wesley, 84-82, Saturday afternoon.
The Bobcats (6-17, 4-12 CAC) led 13-5 early on in the first half, but Wesley (8-15, 6-10 CAC) stormed back with a 14-0 run that included going 8-for-8 at the free-throw line to sneak ahead, 19-13 with just under 11 minutes before the intermission.
A layup by sophomore guard Tyler Michael and a three-pointer from senior guard Nick Smoot knotted the game at 21-21. Michael added a three-point play with 4:17 to go to start the Bobcats' rally. A huge dunk and layup from Michael book-ended a layup and three from senior guard Jordan Jones to send Frostburg into the locker room with a 40-37 advantage.
The Bobcats led the Wolverines for just over nine minutes when two free throws from Wesley's JW Lawson knotted the game for the seventh time at 57-57. The visitors took a 6-0 run to lead 63-58, but it was short-lived as Michael and Smoot notched back-to-back layups coupled with a trey from senior guard James Peters to lift FSU up two, 65-63, with 7:35 to go.
FSU pressured Wesley, but the Wolverines held on until Smoot hit a last-second, game-tying three-pointer to deadlock the game at 77-77 and force overtime.
A three from Peters gave FSU an 82-79 lead with 1:48 left in overtime, but Wesley was 3-for-4 at the line to tie the game for the tenth time, 82-82 with 1:01 to go.
Neither team allowed a basket from the other until the Wolverines' Anthony Bowers got a jumper off with five seconds to go to steal the final 84-82 victory.
Michael led Frostburg with 22 points on 9-of-12 shooting, while Smoot added 19 points and eight assists. Peters added 14 points with four three-pointers and sophomore forward Zachary Coalmon finished with 11 rebounds and seven blocks.
Lawson finished with a game-high 30 points, while Wayne Lennon added a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds.
The Bobcats return to the court Wednesday, February 17 as they play host to York (Pa.). Tipoff is scheduled for 8:00 pm.
