BUENA VISTA, Va. – The Frostburg State men's basketball team outscored Capital Athletic Conference foe Southern Virginia 46-37 in the second half to rally back from a 15-point deficit and force the game into overtime, but ultimately came up short, 87-86, Wednesday evening.
Senior guard James Peters had a season-high 30 points and was 9-for-10 at the free throw line to lead the Bobcats (6-16, 4-11 CAC) offensively.
FSU trailed by as many as 18 in the first half, but clawed their way back in the second half with a three-pointer from senior guard Nick Smoot to knot the game at 58-58 with 8:07 to play in regulation.
Both teams exchanged the lead, and it looked as if Southern Virginia (9-13, 8-7 CAC) would seal the win on a jumper from David Baety that put the Knights up, 75-73, with 30 seconds left. However, Peters gave the visitors a chance at redemption with a made layup with 11 seconds to go to send the game into overtime.
Despite a last-second steal and layup from sophomore guard Tyler Michael that brought the Bobcats within one at the end of overtime, free throws proved to be the game-changer as SVU was 8-for-8 from the free throw line in overtime. The Knights finished 28-for-32 at the line.
The Bobcats opened the game with jumpers from Peters and Michael, but Southern Virginia quickly hit the gas pedal and used a 10-0 run in the opening minutes to take a 13-4 lead with 15:39 to play before halftime.
An 18-6 Knight run then gave SVU their 18-point lead, but FSU used a 12-0 run highlighted with three back-to-back treys from senior guard Jordan Jones and two from Peters to bring the 'Cats back within six, 35-29. A last-second three from Southern Virginia's Nate Adamson gave the Knights a nine-point 38-29 lead at halftime.
Smoot added 15 points and was 3-for-5 behind the arc, while Michael added 13 points. Senior forward Shawn Henson chipped in nine points and 14 rebounds. Freshman forward Edwin Cole finished with four points, six rebounds and five blocks.
Anders Jacobson led the Knights with 27 points and eight rebounds, while Baety finished with 19 points and seven boards.
