NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Despite a two-point lead in the second half, the Frostburg State men's basketball team dropped a 62-53 decision to seventh-ranked Christopher Newport at the Freeman Center, Saturday afternoon.
FSU surged back from a 16 point deficit in the first half and Junior Tyler Michael made back-to-back jumpers in the second half of play to give the Bobcats a two-point lead over the nationally-ranked Captains with eight minutes remaining in the game. Michael finished the day with a team-high 15 points.
FSU (1-6, 0-2 CAC) shot 31.6% from the field on 18-of-57 attempts and made four three-pointers while the Captains shot only 29.5% from the field on 18-of-61 attempts and tallied seven three-pointers.
Junior Zachary Coalmon led the team with 11 rebounds while sophomore Edwin Cole tallied 10 rebounds and six points.
CNU jumped out to a quick start, scoring 15 unanswered points in the opening minutes of the half. The Captains continued to dominate the court, opening up their biggest lead of the game, 20-4, with 10:25 remaining on the clock. However, the Bobcats started to gain some momentum, and cut the lead to just eight points, 27-19, behind two made free-throws and a jumper from Cole and a three-pointer from junior Dalton Gaus with three minutes showing on the clock.
Gaus made a jumper with three seconds remaining in the half as the Bobcats trailed the Captains, 33-24, going into the locker rooms.
The Bobcats stormed into the second half, as Michael scored back-to-back points and Coalman scored on a layup to cut the CNU lead to three, 33-30. FSU continued to dominate the start of the half, holding the Captains to just seven points in the opening ten minutes of play and outshooting CNU, 14-7, during the stretch.
The jumper from Michael with 7:57 on the clock gave FSU its only lead of the game, 42-20, as CNU quickly answered with a three-pointer to regain the lead, 43-42. Four made free throws from CNU's Marcus Carter opened up the Captain lead, 49-42, with five minutes remaining in play.
A layup from Michael and two free throws from Lawrence Pettis Jr. cut the Captain lead to six, 56-50, with 1:28 remaining; however, it wasn't enough as CNU escaped with the 62-53 victory.
Carter led CNU with a team high 13 points and added nine rebounds, while his teammates Rayshard Brown tallied 11 points and Aaron McFarland grabbed 10 rebounds.
The Bobcats will return to the court Wednesday, December 7
th when they host CAC opponent Penn State Harrisburg for a game set to start at 8:00 PM.
