FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Junior Tyler Michael, sophomore Edwin Cole and freshman Rhashad Johnson each finished in double figures, but the Frostburg men's basketball team fell at Mary Washington, 75-55, in the league opener for both schools, Wednesday.
Michael and Johnson tied for the team lead with 13 points, while Cole pulled down a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
The Bobcats (1-5, 0-1) shot just 33.3 percent from the field on 21-of-63 attempts. Mary Washington finished 27-of-57 from the field, but made 11 three-pointers.
Cole and Johnson opened the evening with back-to-back baskets for Frostburg for a 4-0 cushion. Michael connected on three-straight buckets and Johnson hit a layup at 14:49 as the Bobcats increased their lead to 12-5.
The Eagles (3-1, 1-0) rebounded with an 11-0 run over the next three minutes for a 16-12 edge before freshman Lawrence Pettis, Jr. hit a jumper at 11:26 to pull the visitors to 16-14.
With 7:27 showing on the first half clock, junior Dalton Gaus hit a three-pointer as Frostburg recaptured the lead, this time at 24-23. Cole added a layup at 2:56 and Johnson hit a three-pointer at :42 that pulled Frostburg's deficit to 38-31 at halftime.
Following a Johnson three-pointer for Frostburg's first basket of the second half, UMW quickly scooted to a 12-point lead, 48-36, just under six minutes into action.
Michael started an answering run for Frostburg with a layup at 13:50 and FSU outscored Mary Washington 7-0 over a two-minute span to pull within three at 48-45. Freshman Dexter Pelap capped the scoring jolt with a pair of free throws.
The Eagles' Jamal Newton made a three-pointer at 11:53 for a 51-45 lead and the hosts started to pull away from there. Mary Washington outscored Frostburg 21-10 over the final 11:53.
Freshman Obediah Stith capped the evening's scoring for Frostburg with a three-pointer with :42 left before Newton hit a layup that brought the final to 75-55.
John Lutkenhaus scored a game-high 24 points with five three-pointer to lead the Eagles. Austin Hall added 14 points, while Newton finished with 15.
The Bobcats return to action on Saturday when they visit seventh-ranked Christopher Newport at 4:00 pm.
