FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State volleyball team split a pair of games during the Frostburg Tri-Tournament at Bobcat Arena, Saturday. The Bobcats dropped a 3-1 decision to St. Mary's (Md.) in the morning before coming back to sweep Goucher, 3-0, in the late game.
Frostburg (10-16, 1-5 CAC) opened the tournament against Capital Athletic Conference rival St. Mary's (20-9, 5-2 CAC). The Bobcats won the first set, 25-15, but the Seahawks came back to win three consecutive sets, 25-17, 25-15, and 25-20.
Junior Zoe Harris posted her first career double-double as she collected 10 kills and 12 digs. Junior Naya Cheatem led the attack with 14 kills while freshman Ashante Corey-Bey notched five blocks and junior Madelyn Torres collected 39 assists. On defense, freshman Kathryn Lough totaled 20 digs while Torres added 15.
The Seahawks held the advantage in kills, 60-49, assists, 53-44, and digs, 100-97. However, the Bobcats posted six blocks to St. Mary's five.
The visitors jumped out to a 7-3 lead in set one, however, the Bobcats went on a seven-point run to catch up and take over the lead, 20-11. FSU increased its lead to 23-12 and eventually won the set, 25-15. Torres notched the final point of the set with a kill.
Set two remained a close battle between the hosts and visitors, the Seahawks led by one, 8-7, in the opening points. However, St. Mary's scored six-unanswered to increase its lead, 14-7 over the Bobcats. Corey-Bey and Grimes each tallied a kill in FSU's final points of the set to try to chase down the Seahawks; however it wasn't enough as St. Mary's earned the 25-17 win.
St. Mary's used a six-point rally to jump ahead in the third set, 10-4. FSU used a four-point and a two-point rally to try to claw its way back into the set; however St. Mary's held off the Bobcats to win, 25-15.
In the fourth and final set, FSU scored eight unanswered points to gain a 10-3 advantage to open play. The Bobcats remained in the lead for most of the set but the Seahawks used four and three point rallies to take over the lead, 24-20. St. Mary's Mimi Graf used a kill to win the final point of the set and give the Seahawks the 25-20 victory.
In the final game of the day, FSU swept Goucher in a quick three sets, 25-11, 25-16 and 25-22.
Harris collected eight kills for FSU while Torres added 18 assists and Lough tallied 10 digs. The Bobcats led the Gophers in kills, 35-23, aces, 7-4, blocks, 4-2, assists, 32-23 and digs, 48-46.
FSU dominated from the start in set one, the Bobcats jumped out to an 11-6 lead and then used a three and four-point rally to go up, 18-9. The Bobcats scored the last six points of the set behind three kills from Harris and a kill from Corey-Bey to win, 25-11.
The Bobcats cruised to a win in the second set behind three three-point rallies. Torres collected three kills and Tshitenge handed out two in the 25-16 win in set two.
The Gophers challenged FSU in the third set, opening with a 16-9. However, FSU did not give up and clawed its way back and used a seven-point rally to tie the set at 22 and eventually win it, 25-22.
During the neutral game, St. Mary's beat Goucher in three sets, 25-10, 25-16 and 25-15.
The Bobcats return to the court tomorrow when they host Marymount (Va.) for a game set to start at 3:00 pm.
