A Pair of Second Half Surges Carry Frostburg Men

FROSTBURG, Md. – Frostburg State used a pair of second half runs to earn a 74-67 win over Marymount, Wednesday at Bobcat Arena.
 
The Bobcats (4-8, 2-3) won for the third time in four games and Wednesday marks back-to-back league victories for FSU.
 
Frostburg finished with five players in double figures behind a career-high 17 points from sophomore Dalton Gaus. He scored 15 of his 17 in the second half, but it was his outburst late in the second that helped seal the win for Frostburg.
 
FSU used a 21-3 scoring spurt over an eight-minute stretch for its largest lead of the night, 54-39, with 7:58 showing in the game. Marymount (4-8, 1-4) answered with a 15-3 run of its own that trimmed Frostburg's lead to just three, 57-54, with 3:02 showing.
 
Frostburg rebounded behind a pair of three-pointers and two steals from Gaus that helped the hosts grab a 63-54 lead. Gaus knocked down his first three-pointer at 2:39, intercepted a pass on the ensuing Saint possessions and swished another three-pointer at 2:04 as Frostburg led by nine. His second steal setup a made free throw from sophomore Tyler Michael that extended Frostburg's advantage to 64-54 with 2:01 left.
 
Marymount made one final attempt to retake the lead, cutting its deficit to 64-60 at 1:07, but Frostburg finished 10-of-12 at the foul line inside the final minute to seal the win. Gaus was a perfect 6-of-6 at the free throw line during that stretch.
 
The first half featured seven lead changes and four ties and Frostburg emerged with a 29-28 lead at intermission. Senior Torrell Goodman paced FSU during the opening stanza with 12 points and five rebounds on 5-of-7 shooting.
 
The Bobcats made 10 three-pointers and turned 22 Marymount turnovers into 30 points. It's the third time in four games that FSU has made 10 or more three-pointers.
 
Senior James Peters finished with 16 points and four assists, while Goodman and senior Shawn Henson each contributed 12 points. Senior Nick Smoot added 10 points, six assists and four steals, while sophomore Zachary Coalmon had just three points, but tied a season-high with seven blocks.
 
D'Ondre Stockman led the Saints with 21 points on 8-of-10 shooting with four three-pointers. Rick Narcisse added 12 points and Colin Burkhart grabbed 10 rebounds.
 
Frostburg State returns to action on Saturday at St. Mary's at 4:00 pm.
