ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – Senior Shawn Henson recorded his second double-double this season and four Bobcats posted double-digit efforts as the Frostburg State men's basketball team defeated Capital Athletic Conference foe St. Mary's (Md.), 71-65, Saturday afternoon.
The Bobcats (5-8, 3-3 CAC) earned their third-straight victory behind solid play from Henson (15 points, 14 rebounds), senior Nick Smoot (17 points), senior James Peters (16 points), and sophomore Tyler Michael (14 points, six rebounds). The Seahawks fall to 7-6 overall and 3-3 in conference play.
The opening six minutes were back-and-forth between FSU and St. Mary's, with the score tying at 2-2, 7-7, and 9-9 before the hosts jumped out on a 7-0 run to take a 16-9 lead with 12:03 before halftime. A made free throw from Michael, then a steal from Smoot and a good three-pointer, again from Michael, brought the Bobcats back within three, 16-13.
With just under six minutes remaining, FSU tore off on a six-point rally and two good free throws from Peters tied the game at 26-26, then gave the Bobcats a 27-26 lead with 4:26 before the intermission.
Both teams traded points, but back-to-back threes from Smoot and Michael gave the visitors a 35-32 lead. However, St. Mary's Marsalis Hurley hit a jumper just inside the arc with five seconds remaining and FSU took a one-point, 35-34 lead heading into the locker room.
The Seahawks rallied back with a 6-4 run in the opening minutes of the second half, but it was all Frostburg after that. Down one, 40-39, with 14:11 remaining, Smoot continued the Bobcats' hot three-point shooting as Michael dished a pass to Smoot to put FSU up, 42-40.
The Bobcats dominated play for the majority of the second half, clawing out an 18-4 run to take a 58-44 advantage with 8:32 left to play.
With 5:17 ticking on the clock, Michael again found Smoot behind the arc to give the Bobcats their largest lead of the game, 66-48. The Seahawks' Delaszo Smith answered back with a three of his own, but the FSU offense remained persistent, despite St. Mary's cutting their deficit in half with 30 seconds remaining. However, the Bobcats hit crucial foul shots down the stretch to keep the game out of reach and came away with a 71-65 victory.
Smith led all players with 21 points for the Seahawks, while teammate Hurley added a double-double with 14 points and 14 boards.
The Bobcats return to action Wednesday, January 13 when they play host to Southern Virginia for a CAC matchup at Bobcat Arena at 8:00 pm.
