FROSTBURG, Md. –The Frostburg State volleyball team split a pair of marathon matches Saturday, first defeating Neumann, 3-1, and then falling to Lebanon Valley, 3-2, at Bobcat Arena.
Senior Aimee Petrides hit a career milestone as she added her 1,000
th kill in the Bobcats' first match of the day against Neumann. Petrides needed just seven kills to reach 1,000 and exploded for a game-high 19.
FSU (9-7) kept the first set close, before Neumann (7-11) used a 7-0 rally to come back from four points down (19-15) and take a 21-19 lead. The Knights didn't look back and took the first set, 25-23.
The second set saw 18 ties before the Bobcats scored four of the final five points (25-23) to even the match at 1-1.
FSU jumped to an early lead in the following game and scored a quick three points and never relinquished the lead en route to a 25-19 win.
Frostburg rallied from seven points down (10-3) in the fourth and final set to tie the game at 10-10 and used a 12-2 run to take a two-point advantage, 14-12.
Neumann fought its way back to a 23-20 lead, but the Bocbats again clawed their way back into the game with a 7-2 run to win the set and match, 27-25.
Despite the Knights holding a 13-5 advantage in service aces, the Bobcats had more kills (49-43), blocks (7-3), assists (45-38) and digs (74-73).
A trio of sophomores produced great numbers for the hosts as Naya Cheatem added 17 kills and Sabrina Roberts had five blocks. Madelyn Torres added 39 assists while classmate Lindsey Scepura had 27 digs.
A marathon match between the Bobcats and Lebanon Valley (10-5) saw all five sets between the teams close, as the Dutchmen won the first two sets and the final game to earn the 3-2 victory.
Down 9-7 in the first set, Lebanon Valley used a 14-2 rally to take a 20-12 lead. The Bobcats, however, used a late four-point run to keep the pressure on the Dutchmen, but the visitors held on to win 25-19.
Lebanon Valley proved tough in the second set and never allowed the Bobcats to score more than three consecutive points on the way to a 25-16 win.
Frostburg showed perseverance and came back from a 15-10 deficit to score 15 of the final 17 match points, including the final seven, to take the third set, 25-17.
The Dutchmen kept game four in check as both teams exchanged points throughout the set, before the Bobcats scored the last two points (25-23) to tie the match at 2-2.
Neither team scored more than three straight points in the fifth set and the Bobcats tied the game at 12-12, but the Dutchmen ultimately came away with the final 15-13 victory.
Cheatem added a career-high 25 kills in the final game while Petrides added 16. Torres also had a career-best day with 57 assists. Scepura finished the match with 25 digs.
