FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State volleyball team fell in its Capital Athletic Conference opener to Mary Washington, 3-0, Wednesday night at Bobcat Arena.
The Bobcats (9-8, 0-1 CAC) were led by sophomore Lindsey Scepura's 14 digs, while classmate Madelyn Torres had 19 assists and fellow sophomore Naya Cheatem added nine kills for the hosts.
FSU kept the first set close and was down just three points, 13-10, before the visitors ran out in front with a 7-2 streak to take a 20-12 lead. Both teams had five points each to round out the scoring, with the Eagles taking the final 25-17 advantage.
In the second game, the Bobcats again kept pace with the Eagles (14-4, 2-0 CAC) and were down just one point, 7-6, before UMW used two almost consecutive 7-1 runs to jump ahead, 21-10. The Eagles then put the game away with four of the final five points to take the set, 25-13.
After a quick 2-2 tie in the final set, UMW ran ahead with an 8-0 run and never looked back en route to a 25-12 win.
Frostburg travels to Union, N.J. for the Kean Tournament on Saturday, October 2. The Bobcats will face Baruch at 4:00 pm, and then square off with Olivet at 6:00 pm.
