FROSTBURG, Md. – Senior Alexandra Darrow has been nothing short of impressive over the last two weeks and she might have saved her best effort for Wednesday's home game against Washington & Jefferson.
Darrow scored in the 26
th minute and again in the 97
th minute of the second overtime frame to lift Frostburg to a thrilling 2-1 win over W&J.
The victory pushes Frostburg's winning streak to six games and it sits at 6-2 on the season. Meanwhile, the loss drops the Presidents to an even 4-4.
Despite each team scoring a goal in the opening half, the game started off slow as the two teams accounted for just four shots in the first.
Junior Taylor Bowen found Darrow off a penalty corner for the game's first goal at 25:14.
Washington & Jefferson answered with a little less than two minutes remaining in the first stanza when Alana Boyd outran the defense and dribbled past Bobcat keeper Jackie Gover for the game-tying goal.
The second half featured four shots on both sides and W&J held an 8-1 advantage in shots during the first overtime. In the 80
th minute, the Presidents were awarded a penalty stroke, but Amanda Steffey's shot was batted down by Gover keeping the score at 1-1 and headed for a second overtime.
In the second OT, Frostburg attempted four shots, but it was the final attempt that counted the most.
After having a shot saved just seconds earlier, Darrow was taken down in front of the W&J goal and was awarded a penalty shot. Without hesitation, she buried the shot in the right side of the net as the team rushed the field in celebration.
Gover and the Bobcat defense did its part to help keep W&J to just one goal, despite 19 shots and a decisive 19-8 edge in penalty corners. Gover stopped nine shots and surrendered just one goal.
Frostburg returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Bridgewater at 2:00 pm.
Notes: After being held scoreless over the first two games of the season, Darrow has totaled 13 goals, three assists and has compiled two hat tricks during the current six-game winning streak for Frostburg … The Bobcats have outscored their opponents 26-5 during the winning streak.
