ERIE, Pa. – The Frostburg State volleyball team fell in both of its matches on the opening day of the Penn State Behrend Tournament, first falling to Geneva 3-0, and then slipping to the hosts 3-1, Friday night.
It was a game of streaks in the first match against Geneva, as the Golden Tornadoes (7-1) used two five-point runs in the first set to get past Frostburg, 25-15. The Bobcats were then unable to claw their way back into the second set after Geneva opened up with a 6-0 run and never looked back to take the game, 25-16. In the final set, the Bobcats (2-5) came within one point 8-7, but the Golden Tornadoes managed a 9-1 rally and finished off the match, 25-15.
Sophomore Madelyn Torres had a game-high 19 assists while classmate Naya Cheatem added eight kills.
Despite leading in kills (55-45), assists (54-46) and digs (82-63), the Bobcats fell in the nightcap to Penn State Behrend in four sets, 3-1.
FSU boasted a .244 hitting percentage in the third set and a .343 hitting percentage in the final game, but it wasn't enough to overtake the host Lions as they rallied from a point down in the first set, 8-7, to come back and take a 1-0 game advantage, 25-18. The second set saw the Bobcats come back from seven points down, 14-6, and roll a 12-1 streak to take a three-point advantage, 18-15. However, the Lions persevered to win the set, 26-24. Frostburg used another 12-1 run in the third set to rally back from a 6-5 deficit and earn a 25-18 set win and keep the match close. Despite much of the final set with back-and-forth points, the Bobcats ultimately fell, 25-18.
Cheatem led both teams with 22 kills while Torres added 47 assists. Sophomore Lindsey Scepura finished with 25 digs.
The Bobcats square off the Bethany (W. Va.) at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow morning, then face D'Youville at 2:30 p.m. to round out the final two matches of the tournament.
