#2 Bobcats Drop Regular Season Finale

FROSTBURG, Md. – The second-ranked Frostburg State baseball dropped its regular season finale to Franklin & Marshall, 4-1, Friday afternoon.

The Bobcats wrap up the regular season with an impressive 37-6 record while the Diplomats improved to 28-12. With the regular season under wraps, FSU awaits the NCAA selection to where the Bobcats are headed for the 2015 NCAA DIII Regional Tournament. The selections will be announced late Sunday night or Monday morning.

The Diplomats scored first as Brett Poniros came home on a sacrifice fly in the top of the first. Franklin & Marshall were threatening to score once again in the top of the fourth with runners on second and third but a hard-hit line out to senior shortstop Ricky Castro ended the inning and got starting pitcher senior Clayton Freimuth out of trouble.

After two Diplomat runs came home in the sixth on one hit and two errors, the Bobcats posted their first run of the game to avoid their first shutout of the season. Senior Zach Weiss singled to right field with one out. Classmate Nick Walker followed with a single to through the left side and advanced to second on a fielding error by the F&M centerfielder that allowed Weiss to score from first.

Franklin & Marshall added its final run of the game to bring the score to its final at 4-1 in the top of the eighth on a run-scoring double play ball with runners on the corners.

Freshman Daniel Richardson pitched a scoreless ninth but the Bobcats were unable to get a rally going despite a pair of hits from seniors Nick Walker and Lane Farmer and score held at 4-1.

Freimuth endured the loss on the mound for the Bobcats after giving up one unearned run on two hits and five walks while striking out three. Alex Guerra earned the win for the Diplomats while Andrew Mascis picked up his first save.

Walker led the Bobcats at the plate with a pair of hits while Weiss scored the team's only run.

Frostburg State earned the Capital Athletic Conference's automatic bid to the NCAA DIII Regional Tournament that is set to begin on Wednesday, May 13. The Bobcats will learn where they are going late Sunday night or early Monday morning.
