FROSTBURG, Md. – After three-and-a-half quarters of a back-and-forth affair, Frostburg grabbed the momentum and never looked back.
Trailing 6-5 nearly five minutes into the fourth quarter, the Bobcats scored back-to-back goals to earn a 7-6 victory over Mary Washington in the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament semifinals, Saturday.
The win lifts the Bobcats (16-2) into the CAC Title game against Salisbury next Saturday at Sea Gull Stadium. A time will be announced later this week.
The late-game rally against the Eagles was sealed when senior Chris Rios scored an unassisted goal with 5:22 to knot the contest at 6-6. At 4:41, junior Tate Rolland buried a shot off an assist from senior Devin Colegrove as the Bobcats took the lead for good.
Bobcat head coach Tommy Pearce called for a timeout with 5:30 showing to set up a play for Rios at 5:22, while junior Erik Geiser won a key faceoff at 5:22 to help setup Rolland's go-ahead goal.
Frostburg ran out the clock over the final 4:41 and was aided by two late penalties on Mary Washington (8-8).
Despite the loss, the Eagles seemed to hold the momentum for much of the contest after taking a 1-0 lead and holding three different one-goal advantages during the contest.
Frostburg grabbed a 4-3 lead as Rolland scored just over a minute into the third quarter. He later opened the fourth quarter with another goal to again hand the Bobcats a lead, this time at 5-4.
UMW recaptured the lead following goals at 11:00 and 10:05, setting up the late game heroics from Rios and Rolland.
The final numbers were as close as the score between the two teams. Frostburg held a 30-28 edge in shots and won 9-of-17 faceoffs. The Bobcats finished 17-of-20 on clear attempts, while Mary Washington was 15-of-18. The only sizeable different was Frostburg's 51-25 advantage in ground balls.
Rolland led all players in scoring with four goals, three in the second half, including the game winner late in the fourth. Rios finished with a goal and an assist, while junior Blake Grudzien and freshman Ethan Aikin each scored once. Junior Tom Kraemer notched eight saves in the victory.
Miles Davis scored two goals and added an assist for the Eagles, while Jack Carver scored twice. Keeper Colin Bressan finished with 11 saves after making 19 in the regular-season meeting.
