Frostburg Falls In CAC Title Game

SALISBURY, Md. – Frostburg State surrendered the first four goals and couldn't recover in a 14-5 loss to Salisbury University in the 2015 Capital Athletic Conference Tournament Championship game, Saturday.

The victory hands the eighth-ranked Sea Gulls (15-4) their ninth-straight victory and their 19th CAC Title. The win also gave SU the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Frostburg entered the contest looking for its first CAC Title and settles at 16-3 with the loss. The Bobcats, who made their first CAC Championship Game appearance, now await a possible at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. The NCAA selection show is set for Sunday night at 9:00 pm and can be watched online at www.ncaa.com.

Salisbury opened the contest with the first four goals and later used a nine-goal run over the second and third quarters to seal the win. Carson Kalama scored four goals to lead the Sea Gulls, while Thomas Cirillo added two goals and two assists.

Senior Chris Rios led Frostburg in scoring with one goal and one assist. Senior Greg Bourne, along with juniors Tate Rolland, Nick Stailey and Spenser Love also added one goal apiece. Senior Devin Colegrove and sophomore Chase Cullison handed out assists.

Following SU's four goals that handed it a 4-0 cushion two-and-a-half minutes into the second quarter, Bourne found the net off a pass from Cullison as FSU pulled to within 4-1. Just over a minute later, Rios found Rolland for the Bobcats' second goal as they started to build momentum and settle into their offense.

The Sea Gulls then collected the game's next nine goals, starting at 3:22 in the second quarter. The run spanned the third frame and ended when Rios scored with 12:40 left in the fourth quarter. Following Salisbury's final goal at 8:12, Love and Stailey found the net at 6:45 and 0:16 to cap the scoring.

Bobcat junior keeper Tom Kraemer notched a career-high 19 saves in the loss. He set his previous career-high at 16 saves during Frostburg's regular-season loss to SU. Junior Erik Geiser won 10-of-17 faceoffs and contributed five ground balls. Stailey paced the Bobcats with six ground balls.

Frostburg trailed Salisbury 44-42 in shots, but the Bobcats held a 32-27 edge in ground balls and won 13-of-22 faceoffs. Both teams failed just two clears as FSU finished 17-for-19 and SU 20-for-22.

Salisbury's Connor Anderson made a career-high 16 saves to help stifle the Bobcat attack.
