ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – Frostburg State got back on the winning track on Saturday after cruising past St. Mary's, 19-8, in the regular-season finale for both schools.
After back-to-back losses last week, the Bobcats got back on track by scoring 19 goals and pulling away from the Seahawks (5-7, 4-4 CAC) in the second half.
The victory locked up the No. 2 seed in the upcoming CAC Tournament and the Bobcats will have a bye in the first round. Frostburg will host the semifinals on Saturday, April 25.
Frostburg had an efficient afternoon against St. Mary's scoring 19 goals on 36 shots and winning 19-of-30 faceoffs. FSU, which also converted 4-of-7 man-up opportunities, was led in scoring behind six goals and three assists from senior Greg Bourne. Senior Devin Colegrove added three goals and two assists, while junior Nick Stailey scored three times.
Frostburg exploded out of the gate by scoring the game's first seven goals through the first 20 minutes of play. Bourne, Colegrove and Stailey each scored twice during the run.
St. Mary's narrowed the gap to 8-5 with five of the next six goals over a four-minute stretch, including two from Steve Jones.
However, the Bobcats countered with two quick scores before the half for a 10-5 cushion at the break. Bourne completed his hat trick before intermission with a score at 2:22 and sophomore Chase Cullison scored off a Bourne pass with 22 seconds remaining.
Frostburg sealed the victory in the second half by outscoring the hosts 9-3. Junior Tate Rolland opened the third quarter with his 27
th goal at 13:25 and the Bobcats used six-straight goals over the third and fourth quarters to build their advantage to 19-7 before Tim Perugini closed out the game with a tally with eight seconds showing.
The win over St. Mary's marks the seventh time this season that the Bobcats have scored more than 15 goals in a game and they are the second team in country to reach 15 wins. Junior keeper Tom Kraemer notched nine saves in the victory.
Jones finished with three goals for St. Mary's, while Perugini added two.
