FROSTBURG, Md. – In a back-and-forth, highly contested affair between 17
th-ranked Frostburg and 11th-ranked Salisbury, it isn't surprising that the game came down to the wire and needed an overtime session to decide a victor.
Following a timeout early in overtime, SU's Nathan Blondino found the back of the net just 49 seconds into extra time to lift the Sea Gulls (10-4, 7-0 CAC) to their fifth-straight win.
What's more, the game featured four lead changes and three ties after Salisbury took a 3-0 lead early in the second quarter and later led 5-1 midway through the second.
Frostburg didn't back down from the challenge by answering with five-straight goals to claim a 6-5 lead with 2:32 to play in the third quarter.
Following the Bobcats' 6-5 lead, neither team led by more than one goal and SU scored the final goal in the fourth quarter to send the contest into regulation before Blondino's game winner.
Salisbury held a 49-27 advantage in shots and won 15-of-19 faceoffs. Bobcat junior keeper Tom Kraemer posted an outstanding effort in net, by helping to stop the SU attack with a career-best 16 saves.
Thomas Cirillo scored the game's first two goals and Blondino added the third as SU built a 3-0 lead with 14:48 showing in the second quarter.
The Bobcats gathered themselves and got on the board at 12:29 when senior Greg Bourne scored off a pass from junior Blake Grudzien. Cirillo (10:23) and Carson Kalama (7:20) further increased Salisbury's lead to 5-1 and appeared to have momentum.
The Bobcats again answered with game's next five goals spanning into the third quarter of action. Senior Chris Rios scored at 6:28 and senior Devin Colegrove found the net at 2:52 as FSU narrowed the gap to 5-3. Bourne was credited with assists on both scores.
Bourne scored his second of the game with 38 seconds left until halftime. Rolland, who assisted Bourne's late first-half goal, opened the third quarter scoring for Frostburg with goals at 6:32 and 2:32 for a 6-5 edge.
Kyle Gross knotted the game at 6-6 with his only score of the contest with 59 seconds left in the third quarter. Bobcat junior Spenser Love scored with 5:50 left in the fourth as Frostburg once again assumed a one-goal lead at 7-6.
However, Salisbury's Brendan Bromwell tied the game at 7-7 with 2:54 left in regulation and Blondino handed the visitors the win in OT.
Rolland and Bourne tied for the Bobcat scoring lead with two goals and two assists each. Rios added one goal and one assist.
Cirillo led Salisbury in scoring with three goals and two assists, while keeper Connor Anderson stopped eight shots for the win. Cameron Maples led the charge at faceoff, winning 13-of-16 attempts.
Frostburg returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Mary Washington at 6:00 pm.
