Men’s Lax Rolls to Fifth-Straight Victory

FROSTBURG, Md. – Senior Devin Colegrove and junior Nick Stailey combined for 60 percent of the Bobcats' goals as the Frostburg State men's lacrosse team rolled to a 15-5 victory over Illinois Wesleyan, Monday at Bobcat Stadium.

Colegrove finished the day with five goals, while Stailey added four to power FSU's offense.  Junior Spenser Love added two goals and senior Chris Rios, freshman Nick Pontorno, freshman Ethan Aikin and junior Michael Kibler all found the back of the net for the Bobcats.

The Bobcats, receiving votes in this week's USILA Division III poll, led in shots (39-20), ground balls (36-27), face-offs (15-of-24), was a nearly-perfect 14-of-15 in clear attempts and gave up seven fewer turnovers.

The Bobcats (5-0) outshot the Titans 13-3 and had goals from four different players in the first 15 minutes to take an early 5-0 lead. Colegrove, this week's Capital Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week, got Frostburg on the board just 1:01 into the first quarter as he buried a pass from Rios. Love added his first of the game four minutes later, then Stailey sandwiched goals around a mark from Kibler to round out scoring in the first quarter.

Colegrove (13:58) and Love (11:56) kept the Bobcats rolling with the first two goals of the second quarter and it wasn't until 19:52 into the game that Illinois Wesleyan managed to slip one past the Bobcat defense and bring the score to 7-1. With goals from Aikin and a third from Colegrove, Frostburg held a 9-1 advantage at halftime.

Stailey had a hand in the next three goals, scoring twice and assisting Colegrove to bring the score to 12-1. With 6:32 to play in the third, Tim Smith notched the Titans' second goal off a pass from Nick Winter, but Pontorno answered back less than a minute later on a helper from Rios to keep the Bobcats' 11-goal lead heading into the final 15 minutes.

Illinois Wesleyan's Smith and Alex Lambert put together a two-goal rally in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter, but Frostburg wasn't going to let up as Rios and Colegrove added the last Bobcat goals at 8:03 and 6:30 showing on the clock, respectively. The Titans kept fighting until the end and with time winding down, Illinois Wesleyan's Michael Julius found the back of the net, but ultimately the hosts came away with a 15-5 win at the final horn.

Senior Greg Bourne and Love each had three assists while senior Spencer Barnett picked up five ground balls. Junior goalkeeper Tom Kraemer earned his fifth win of the season and had two saves.

The Titans' (1-3) were led by Smith's two goals and Julius added a goal, an assist and five ground balls. Goalkeeper Steven Laduzinsky had ten saves in the crease.

The Bobcats continue the non-conference portion of their schedule and head to Lycoming College Wednesday for a 4:00 p.m. face-off.
