FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State University men's lacrosse team pulled away for a 14-8 victory over Christopher Newport in CAC action, Saturday, at Bobcat Stadium.
The Bobcats pushed their record to 11-0 overall and 3-0 in league play with the victory, while the Captains fall to 6-3 and 1-1 in the league. FSU is one of just eight teams left undefeated in the nation and is the first to 11 wins.
Junior Tate Rolland was a big reason the nation's top scoring attack was able to pull away from CNU despite trailing 1-0 for much of the first quarter. The Captains scored the game's first goal just 1:10 into action for a 1-0 cushion they held until late in the first.
However, Rolland handed out a pair of assists late in the first and Frostburg rallied with four-consecutive goals in a little under three minutes of action for a 4-1 lead early in the second quarter.
CNU scored back-to-back goals to pull to within 4-3 midway through the second, but Frostburg answered with two of its own for a 6-3 lead at the break. The Bobcats continued the surge into the second half when Rolland scored the third quarter's first goal that began a 5-1 run that gave Frostburg control of the game. Junior Nick Stailey ended the run with his third goal of the game with just 6:48 left in the third for an 11-4 Bobcat advantage.
Christopher Newport scored two goals in the third and two more in the fourth, but the Frostburg lead was too much to overcome. Rolland capped the afternoon with the contest's final tally with 3:12 showing for the 14-8 final.
Rolland finished the game with eight points behind four goals and four assists. Stailey scored four goals and senior Devin Colegrove handed out four assists. Colegrove handed out his first assist with just 35 seconds left in the first half for his 200
th career point as a Bobcat.
Sophomore Kyle Horak won 6-of-9 faceoffs, while junior Eric Geiser won 9-of-17 and junior keeper Tom Kraemer tied a season-high with 11 saves. Geiser and Kraemer tied for a team-best six ground balls.
Despite winning by six goals, Frostburg held a narrow edge in shots (38-37) and ground balls (40-38), but won 15-of-26 faceoffs and finished 22-of-24 on clear attempts.
Will Geise scored one goal and handed out three assists for the Captains. Brooks Billings and Alex Barber each added two goals, while keeper Matt Hayden stopped 10 shots in the loss.
Frostburg travels to Bridgewater (Va.) this Tuesday for its final non-conference game of the regular season at 7:00 pm.
