FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State men's lacrosse team had 14 players score, including a season-high 11 goals in the first quarter, as they cruised past Saint Vincent, Wednesday night at Bobcat Stadium.
Led by junior Blake Grudzien's first-quarter hat trick, the Bobcats (10-0) used their extensive first half to power past the Bearcats (3-4), 20-3.
FSU got on the board early and often and peppered in goals throughout the first 15 minutes, with tallies from senior Chris Rios (1 goal), Grudzien (3 g, 1 assist), junior Tate Rolland (1g), senior Greg Bourne (2g, 1a), junior Michael Kibler (1g), senior Kreigh Kirby (1g), senior Spencer Barnett (1g) and sophomore Chase Cullison (1g).
Jon Souders found Bryce Pasquariello to chip in the Bearcats' first mark of the game 1:11 into the second quarter, but Frostburg kept the pressure on and added four more goals to take a 15-1 lead into halftime.
FSU outshot Saint Vincent 38-2 in the first 30 minutes and held a 39-15 advantage in ground balls.
With goals from Bourne (13:45) and Grudzien (11:12) to open the third quarter, the Bobcats sat comfortably with a 17-1 advantage, but following a Frostburg penalty, Tim Oxenreiter took advantage of the man-up opportunity with help from Anthony Hogeback to find the back of the net for the Bearcats' second goal.
The same visitor duo added the next goal, with 12:06 left to play in the fourth quarter, but that's all Saint Vincent could muster as a trio of Bobcat underclassmen rounded out scoring with marks from freshmen Ryan Baukhages (10:15) and Evan Arsenault (6:26) and sophomore Brendan Krivak (2:03).
The Bobcats held an advantage in every statistical category including shots (58-12) and ground balls (62-30), while winning 22-of-26 face-offs, and going a nearly-perfect 15-of-16 on clear attempts. Frostburg also had nine fewer turnovers than the Bearcats (23-14).
Cullison finished with two goals and two assists. Also finding the back of the net for the Bobcats were senior Devin Colegrove (1g, 3a) and juniors Nick Stailey (1g) and Spenser Love (1g). Junior goalkeepers Tom Kraemer and Taylor Schmitz split time in net, with Schmitz finishing with five saves and Kraemer earning his tenth win of the season.
Saint Vincent was led by Oxenreiter's two goals. Goalkeeper Greg Gonzalez finished with 17 saves in the crease.
The Bobcats play host to Christopher Newport in a CAC matchup Saturday at 1:00 pm.
