FROSTBURG, Md. – Thanks to a huge first quarter, the Frostburg State men's lacrosse team held off a late-game rally from Wesley to come away with a 15-7 victory, Sunday afternoon at Bobcat Stadium.
Four Wolverine goals in the final six minutes couldn't stop Frostburg from its dominating ways, and for the second time in three games, nine Bobcats netted at least one goal.
Led by junior Nick Stailey's four goals, FSU scored at least two in each quarter to keep the pressure on Wesley. Seniors Devin Colegrove, Greg Bourne and Spencer Barnett each scored twice in the win.
The Bobcats (9-0, 2-0 CAC) found the back of the net five times in the opening five minutes with two goals from Stailey and a goal apiece from Bourne, Colegrove and Barnett.
Wesley's Sam Seibert finally got the Wolverines on the board, but only after Barnett netted his second of the game, with 6:29 to play in the opening stanza.
Junior Tate Rolland finished a pass from junior Spenser Love, then helped Stailey pick up an early hat trick with 22 seconds left to give Frostburg an extensive 8-1 lead after the first quarter.
Bobcat underclassmen had the next two goals, with freshman Ethan Aikin (9:59) and sophomore Chase Cullison (5:30) sandwiching a Wolverine goal from John Chenault (7:12), to give Frostburg a 10-2 advantage at halftime.
FSU had three out of the four goals scored in the third quarter, with tallies from Bourne, junior Michael Kibler and senior Chris Rios, to stay on top with a 13-3 lead.
Wesley (4-2, 0-1 CAC) then went on a fourth-quarter 4-2 rally, but the Bobcats kept the game in check with a fourth goal from Stailey and, following a Wolverine penalty, a man-up goal from Colegrove to finalize the 15-7 win.
Frostburg led in shots (39-25) and face-offs (19-of-25), including winning 12-of-14 in the first half, and were an almost-perfect 9-of-10 in clear attempts.
Rolland, Rios, Cullison, Aikin and Kibler all had one goal each to round out scoring for the Bobcats, while Love dished out three assists. Junior goaltenders Tom Kraemer and Taylor Schmitz combined for nine saves in the crease.
Wesley was led by Seibert's three goals, while Devin Hyatt finished with one goal and one assist. Goaltender Josh Dean had 11 saves in the loss.
The Bobcats play host to Saint Vincent in a non-conference matchup Wednesday night at 7:00 pm.
