FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State men's lacrosse team remained perfect Wednesday night as they defeated McDaniel, 9-5, at Bobcat Stadium.
A strong first quarter lifted the Bobcats (8-0) over two two-goal rallies from the Green Terror (3-3) and junior Tate Rolland paced FSU with four goals and an assist, including the game-opener and the final two tallies.
Rolland found the back of the net just 36 seconds into the opening quarter and 1:26 later, set up senior Devin Colegrove for the Bobcats' second mark. With 6:08 remaining, senior Greg Bourne buried a shot past the Green Terror's Eric Ritchie to put FSU up 3-0.
Senior Chris Rios found Bourne with 7:18 remaining in the second quarter for Frostburg's fourth goal, but a quick rally in the final two minutes pushed McDaniel to a two-goal deficit heading into halftime.
Just 2:44 into the second half, the junior-senior duo of Rolland and Colegrove picked up where they left off in the first quarter and gave the Bobcats' a three-goal cushion. McDaniel's Jason Lawrence added his second mark of the game 28 seconds later, but Frostburg would not be shut down as senior Spencer Barnett slipped past the defense to pick up his fourth goal of the season.
With 8:04 left in the game, Rios added a goal of his own, unassisted, to push the Bobcats' lead back to four, 7-3. With back-to-back goals from Calvin Fleagle (5:58) and Timothy McNichol (5:01), McDaniel's second two-goal rally looked to persevere, but Rolland put the game out of reach with the final two Bobcat goals just 49 seconds apart to guarantee Frostburg's 9-5 victory.
FSU outshot McDaniel 41-24 and was a nearly-perfect 18-of-19 on clear attempts.
Bourne finished with two goals, while Colegrove (1 goal, 1 assist), Rios (1g, 1a), and Barnett (1g) all found themselves on the stat sheet. Junior goalkeeper Tom Kraemer finished the day with 10 saves.
The Green Terror was led by Lawrence's two goals and one assist. Ritchie had 12 saves in the cage for the loss.
The Bobcats play host to Wesley in a conference matchup Saturday at 1:00 pm.
