Bobcats Hold Off Penn State Harrisburg

HARRISBURG, Pa. – Five players scored in double figures and the Frostburg State men's basketball team held off Penn State Harrisburg for a 70-67 road victory, Wednesday.
 
Juniors Nick Smoot and Jerel Carter played vital roles in each half and senior Jabari Kamau helped seal the game at the foul line down the stretch as the Bobcats evened their overall record at 10-10 overall and improved their CAC mark to 6-7. Carter scored 13 in the first half and finished a perfect 3-for-3 from three-point land. Meanwhile, Smoot totaled 10 in the second half to help FSU hold off the Lions (3-17, 3-10). Kamau finished with 15 points behind 9-of-12 free throws.
 
Penn State Harrisburg struggled from the floor in the opening stanza and the Bobcats took advantage behind 50 percent shooting (13-of-26) and five three-pointers. Midway through the first, Frostburg held a slim 17-15 edge and outscored the hosts 19-7 over the final 10 minutes for a 36-22 halftime lead. Carter scored five-straight points to spark the Bobcats to a 22-15 advantage.
 
The Lions opened second-half action with the first nine points and cut the deficit to just two, 37-35, at 17:10 before Frostburg rebounded and kept the hosts from narrowing the gap any further. Smoot hit back-to-back baskets as FSU extended its lead to 42-35 and Smoot later hit a three-pointer to give the Bobcats a 49-37 cushion.
 
Penn State Harrisburg cut the Frostburg lead to five points several times in the closing minutes and came as close as 70-67 with just seconds to play, but Frostburg sank 6-of-8 free throws inside the final minute to earn the win.
 
Carter finished with 14 points on 4-of-8 shooting, while Smoot added 16 points and four three-points. Kamau posted a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds. Junior Torrell Goodman contributed 10 points, eight in the second half and classmate Shawn Henson had 10. In total, the Bobcats finished 17-of-27 from the foul line.
 
The Lions were led in scoring behind 17 points from Anthony Morgan. Arick Sodini added 14 .
 
The Bobcats return to action on Saturday when they travel to St. Mary's at 4:00 pm.
