LEXINGTON, Va. – Frostburg State trailed by as many as 16 points in the second half and stormed back to force overtime before capturing a 75-70 win over Sewanee in the first round of the 2015 Washington and Lee Holiday Tournament, Tuesday evening.
The win carries Frostburg (2-7) into the W&L Championship tomorrow afternoon at 4:00 pm against host W&L. The victory also snapped a four-game losing skid for the Bobcats.
Frostburg had just six second-half points as the game clock approached 8:00 remaining before an offensive spark rallied FSU to a 61-61 tie at the end of regulation.
Seth Brown hit back-to-back layups for the Tigers (5-4) as they built two 16-point cushions, the second was 57-41 with 7:38 to play.
From there, the Bobcats stormed back on a 20-4 run behind the scoring tandem of seniors James Peter and Nick Smoot. Smoot started the run with two free throws at 7:04 and Peters knocked down three three-pointers and the final two free throws that tied the contest at 61 with 13 seconds left.
Sophomore Zachary Coalmon did his part to send the game into OT by blocking a Cody Jones jumper with one second left in the second half.
Peters opened the extra frame for Frostburg with a three pointer that handed the Bobcats a 64-63 lead and moments later he knocked down another long range shot that knotted the contest at 69-69.
Coalmon and Smoot combined to shoot a perfect 6-for-6 at the foul line inside the two minutes to seal the win for FSU.
Peters finished with a season-high 27 points behind seven three-pointers. Smoot was second for Frostburg with 18 points, seven assists and three steals. Sophomore Tyler Michael rounded out the three players in double figures with 13.
The Bobcats finished with 11 three-pointers in the game and made 16 free throws. Coalmon made the game's first basket just 11 seconds into action for Frostburg's only lead in regulation and the Bobcats eventually trailed 39-33 at the half.
Sewanee had a balanced offensive attack as five players finished in double-figures and the Tigers outrebounded Frostburg 55-32. Keshonn Carter had 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Clay Born poured in 11 points and 11 boards.
