LEXINGTON, Va. – Frostburg's hot three-point shooting continued for the second game at the Washington and Lee Holiday Tournament, Wednesday, but a pair of late free throws sealed the tournament championship for W&L as the hosts earned a hard-fought 81-80 win over the Bobcats.
Frostburg (2-8) finished with five players in double-figures, knocked down 10 three-pointers and nearly led from wire-to-wire aside from the closing seconds of regulation.
The Bobcats used a 16-point second-half comeback against Sewanee on Tuesday to earn a spot in the championship, but the story flipped on Wednesday as W&L erased a 16-point second-half Frostburg lead to earn the win.
Senior Shawn Henson knocked down a jumper with 13:27 to play in the second to put the Bobcats up 61-45 before Washington and Lee (7-3) began to slowly chip away at the Bobcat lead.
Clayton Murtha hit two free throws with 51 seconds left to give the Generals their first lead of the ballgame 79-78. Henson answered 16 seconds later for FSU with two free throws of his own for an 80-79 advantage.
On its ensuing possession, W&L missed a pair of layups and Frostburg was called for a foul on the rebound sending Andrew Frantz to the foul line. He connected on both attempts to put the Generals up 81-80 with five seconds remaining.
Frostburg had two final chances as the clock hit zero but both attempts were off the mark.
Sophomore Tyler Michael came off the bench to lead FSU in scoring with 20 points on nine baskets. Senior James Peters earned all-tournament honors after totaling 45 points and 11 three-pointers in two games at W&L. On Wednesday, he was second on the team with 18 points and four 3PTs. Senior Nick Smoot and Henson added 13 and 12 points, respectively.
For the Generals, Murtha led the way with 28 points behind 14-of-15 shooting at the foul line. Franz and Andy Kleinlein each added 12.
In the opening half, sophomore Zachary Coalmon opened action with a dunk just seconds into the game and Frostburg controlled much of the tempo in the first period. Frostburg shot nearly 50 percent from the floor and led by as many as 10 points before carrying a 41-36 lead into halftime.
The Bobcats return to the court this Saturday when it hosts Mary Washington at 3:00 pm.
