FROSTBURG, Md. – Frostburg held Roanoke to season lows in points and shooting percentage, but it wasn't enough as the Bobcats dropped a non-league game to the Maroons, 88-73, Sunday.
The Frostburg defense held Roanoke (8-1) to almost 20 points below its average and limited the Maroons to just 38.7 percent shooting. Meanwhile, the Bobcats shot 44.8 percent from the floor and scored 21 points off 17 Roanoke turnovers.
However, the difference came beyond the arc as the Maroons made 11 more three-pointers than the hosts and held a 47-43 edge in rebounding. Roanoke entered the contest as the nation's second-highest scoring team at 107.1 ppg and Division III's 12
th-best shooting team (50.7%).
Both teams finished with three players in double figures as sophomore Tyler Michael came off the bench to lead FSU (1-7) with 19 points. Senior Shawn Henson added 16 and senior Nick Smoot contributed 13 points and nine assists.
Henson hit a layup for the game's first basket just over 20 seconds into the game and the Bobcats held on to a slim lead through the first four minutes of action.
Bryce Woodliff hit a three-pointer at 15:54 for a one-point Roanoke advantage, a lead it never relinquished. Woodliff's three sparked a quick 16-4 run for the visitors as they built a 28-14 cushion with 12:03 to play in the first.
Frostburg answered with an 11-3 run that cut its deficit to six, 31-25 at 8:43. Roanoke increased its lead to 18 before heading into halftime up 10, 50-40.
The Bobcats ran out in the second half and collected a 7-0 spurt to claw back to within three, 56-53 at 15:01. A Smoot three-pointer capped the run and moments later sophomore Zachary Coalman slammed home a left-handed dunk as Frostburg trailed by just four 59-55.
Roanoke slowly pushed its lead back to double figures and led by as many as 17 inside the final minute.
Joey Miller led all players with 22 points and three three-pointers. John Caldwell added 13 points and John Fitchett scored 11. Roanoke shot 42.4 percent from beyond the arc.
Frostburg returns to action on Tuesday, December 28 when it faces Sewanee in the opening game of the Washington & Lee Holiday Tournament at 6:00 pm.
