FROSTBURG, Md. – Three starters scored in double figures and senior guard Nick Smoot earned all-tournament honors, but Frostburg endured an 84-74 loss to Randolph-Macon in the consolation game of the 2015 FSU Tournament, Sunday afternoon.
Smoot led all players in the ballgame with 20 points and finished Frostburg's two games in the tournament with 46 points. On Sunday, he finished 8-of-12 from the floor. Senior Shawn Henson turned in his first career double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Bobcats (0-3), while sophomore Dalton Gaus added 11.
Henson knocked down a layup just four minutes into the game to hand the hosts their only lead of the afternoon, 7-6. Frostburg tied the score three times following its early lead, but couldn't get over the hump and recapture the lead.
Smoot buried a three-pointer just before the midway point of the first half and to knot things at 17-17 and he later hit a layup that tied the game at 22 all.
Randolph-Macon (1-2) slowly increased its lead to five twice late in the first half, before junior Shawn Bozier hit a layup with three seconds left to cut FSU's deficit to 37-35 at the break.
In the second, Gaus hit a layup at 15:28 that tied things for the final time at 43-43. The Yellow Jackets began to slowly pull away from that point on, increasing their lead to 10 with four minutes to play. Smoot hit a layup with two seconds left to settle the final score at 84-74.
Darryl Williams led RMC with 18 points, while all-tournament selection Lamont Wade added 12.
Frostburg made more baskets and three-pointers than Randolph-Macon, but the difference came at the foul line where the visitors converted 29-of-36 foul shots.
FSU returns to action on Tuesday at Waynesburg at 7:00 pm.
Championship GameHood 75, St. Vincent 72
Davon Hill turned in a game-high 22 points and was named the tournament MVP as he led Hood to a 75-72 win over St. Vincent in the championship game of the 2015 FSU Tournament, late Sunday afternoon.
Hood never trailed in the game and St. Vincent tied the game just twice, but the Bearcats didn't make things easy for the Blazers. Jaylon Bell buried a three-pointer with 16 seconds showing as SVC narrowed its gap to 73-72, but Hill sealed the tournament championship with two free throws with 14 seconds left.
